Back to topic... Some points to consider with the 5035, 5196, and 5296...

The 5035 has horological significance as the first AC but it hasn't aged as well as other Pateks in my view.

Both the 5035 and 5196 are 37mm but the 5196 is wearing much larger on the wrist given its thin bezel, empty dial, and overall flatness.

When I was looking for my first Patek I considered the 5196 and the 5296. Both are nice watches but on my small wrists I found them a tad too large and I certainly did not fall in love with either when trying them on at the AD. In the end I went with a preowned 3998P which most consider too small today at 34mm but continues to work well for me. One more point on the 5196 is that it has been getting a lot of flak for its undersized movement. Not sure why they discontinued the 5296 but I have the feeling they did not sell well anymore.

In any event I would wait for the new Calatrava releases announced for Basel 2020 this coming April before pulling the trigger on anything.

First Patek purchase for a longtime lurker .....

 By: Charles Buck : February 22nd, 2020-23:28
Hello, I am about to buy my first Patek and I was wanting some advice. I am looking for a good Patek to start with - although I probably only want 2 Pateks in total. I was thinking of either a 5196 or 5296 or a 5035 Annual. Is there any season the 37mm 50...

If you want a Patek Calatrava, then I think you should go for the 5196p for starters. And if you intend to only have 1 Patek watch. 😎

But if you want to add 2 3 pcs. then a self winding is good and for complicated model go for a world time as it is most useful complication. My opinion. Good luck. Buy what sings to your heart. 👍 Geross

I would like to disagree. He had a very constructive argument.

And furthermore in that particular context a very got point i would say! A very theoretical argument that was discussed there indeed.

No offense but pointing out that there is more important stuff than the first world problems discussed in many threads on watch forums is stating the obvious ...

... and makes it no less weird to vent ones anger about a forum in one thread and minutes later opening another thread on that very forum to ask for advice.

Its not about the fact that owning a PP is a first world thing

But saying that the AC is the stuff for the people on the street - that is a bit decadent since most ACs from PP are 45k or so.

Sure, I am not defending the "issue" raised in the other thread...

... and personally prefer a simple Calatrava over most if not all ACs.

Thanks Bill [nt]

The 5035 has a special place in Pateks history. I personally want a moonphase in my AC.

If you only want a few Pateks, id go with a date. So this is why imo you should go with the 5296. There are spectacular sector dial versions in both r and g - i would take one of them - they have that historic sporty chic look the 5196P has for almost hav...

A great analysis, trs. I agree 100 %

Charles, whats your budget? I tend to think that all new 2020s calatravas are amazing but not quite for the price of the watches you asked about lol.

I have no idea what this forum is getting chippy all of a sudden

I would like to see old times here again. We are discussing first world enjoyment not first world problems.
