scratches on the lugs at all ?

It is hard to tell.

I think I see some light hairlines on the lugs - second picture. I understand your concern. I used to collect coins and how do you grade a cleaned coin? They put on the grading label that it has been cleaned and how sharp the details are. The grade it wou...

there are few scratches and i am very much fine with them...

i am trying to confirm the watch was never polished... i am paying for a non polished one... once polished, the value goes down significantly...

If no one can really judge on it for sure

 By: penfriend : February 24th, 2024-17:27
It cannot lower the value imo. To me it looks fine and I wouldn’t bother

Yes, some light hairlines are not important.

I imagine you looked at the photos from amanico. Does the watch appear as sharp? I have learned that when in doubt, don't. I guess it is a sister statement to good things come to those who wait. If you do decide it's unpolished, enjoy!! How could you not?...

Let me start with no knowledge here

I'm not sure how original or how to determine. However, looking at the pictures, the angles on the lugs look sharp to me. To me that is a good sign of not being polished, ie, using an abrasive wheel to smooth down defects. There even are slight scratches ...

Hard to tell as one model "polished" is another model "finish"..

But looking at the photos, to me it seems it was polished. The way the edges look and the slight difference between 2 lugs.

I don't know

So will leave an expert to chime in. I believe the 5970 had that chamfered edge?

For the comparison: Untouched specimens.

...

Often this type is discussion makes very little sense to me.

If I recall you stated this was a grail watch for you. Are you planning on wearing it? If so it will pickup small nicks and scratches. It will become "yours" and carry your life experience with you. If that is the case then why concern yourself so much if...

I agree here

Find the use case. However, it seems whatever his purpose will be in regards to wearing the watch. One wouldn't want to pay the price delta for unpolished if it was. Whether he wears it afterwards is another consideration. I agree. No need to keep in the ...

And what is your opinion if

someone uses a Cape Cod cloth on it, Nico? I'm curious.

Depends upon who polishes it and their

level of expertise. They can be polished with very little material removed. It's a matter of degree then, isn't it?

My WG 5970 has never been worn

 By: edtonkin : February 25th, 2024-01:42
so I guess I don't have to worry. Stupid me, though. I should be wearing it🤦🏻‍♂️

LOL!!! :)))

Technically light polishing should be fine

 By: yming : February 25th, 2024-02:03
If it’s light polishing, the sharpness are maintained.. the problem is overpolishing, which reduces the sharpness of the original case.. with the 5970’s case design, it’s really difficult to polish without it showing..

I would be inclined to think no, in fact I see that they are stained by humidity, it could be from being stored somewhere without a dehumidifier.

You will never know for certain

Whether the case is truly unpolished. You can only look at the architecture and say whether you think it’s preserved or not. In this case, the architecture is preserved. If it has been lightly polished in the past is not knowable nor is it relevant. There...

Still deciding?

Idk if one can really tell. It if you can’t know for sure the question is whether the watch is worth the price.

Hard to tell from the pics

 By: Dauster : February 25th, 2024-00:48
But since you are concerned I’d only buy from a trusted source and that’s for me collectibility / John Reardon or my AD. Would be very hard for me to spend a quarter million and being unsure about it. I’d rather pay 10% and have a very trusted source get ...

From my experience of looking at 5970 pics

 By: yming : February 25th, 2024-01:47
The easiest parts to see if a 5970 has been polished are the chronopushers and the bezel : - the top of the chronopushers are brushed and the sides are polished, where the 2 finishing meets should be clean and sharp (below are pics of polished and unpolis...

my take on this whole polished versus unpolished for what it is worth-

 By: watch-guy.com : February 25th, 2024-02:41
I think unless you know for sure ie bought the watch yourself and have never had it polished , it is almost impossible yo know for sure However there are many telltale signs of OVERpolishing- brushed. edges, gold hallmarks Buying vintage is totally differ...
