Dear Purists, I kindly seek your purchasing advice, please. 5327 or 5496? Which of these two would you choose based on your experience and preferences and why?

I am leaning towards the 5237 because of the movement used and towards the 5496 due to its Calatrava case design and the easier legibility (in my opinion) but I am not a big fan of retrograde dates. ...

I would choose 5327

For the reason I truly love the micro rotor.

5496 in platinum with honey-brown dial.

With some patience you will find a good one at a decent price. Best, V.

5327 in a heartbeat.

Beautiful watch. Hope this helps. Miles.

Two wonderful watches. The choice for me would be 5496R, but based upon your less than positive feelings about the retrograde, perhaps you would prefer 5327R.

For me the biggest selling point of the 5496 is the retrograde, a highly complex and unusual feature. Also I like that there is constant activity on the dial because of the sweep seconds hand. Also I like the day and month windows. I like that it is chunk...

Ooh, teratoma! I didn't expect to see that used to describe a watch,

But now that you have, I see that it could fit very well sometimes. A seconds hand is a must for me as well. The watch seems alive with it.

5237

Because of the concave bezel!! Thomas

Not the 5496.

I tried it a couple of times: The moonphase looks a bit "cheap", too blank at least. Congratulations that you can afford one of them! Good luck with your decision.

For me the 5237.

Purely for the looks that I prefer.

The 5327 everyday

But in white gold blue dial, I dislike the 5496, I cannot explain really why, but it doesn’t work imho

I have had the same discussion with myself.

I have decided that I like the modernization of the 5327. I like the size of the case. I think the 3940 at 36mm is just too small for my 17 cm wrist. (I must have tried it in 20 times over the years). 38 mm case is the perfect size for my wrist. I have th...

5237 is my liking...it has a wonderful movement

Retrograde date dial is a great but it feels something 'empty' or missing around the moonphase subdial...i couldn't exactly put that in words. Best, mahesh.,

And why not a 5320 ??

I always forget about that piece. It’s really growing on me.

Gorgeous wrist shot! [nt]

5496

...

I want to love the 5327...

and you're right, the slim movement is great despite its age. But the Breguet numerals (that I usually really like) are a quick and dirty fix to hide the small movement (sub-dials close to the center). PP should be better than this imho.

Well I never thought of the Breguet numerals as a filler.

I see them for their beauty. I really like the look of this watch. The 240 Q movement is a proven reliable workhorse. Much like the Metsker engine in a Porsche.

I get your point and agree.

Are the current Porsche engines better than the Metzger engines of the past ?

5496

I prefer the 5496 calendar layout more. Personally I think the three subdials should only be reserved for chronographs.

Between the two

5496R. I also want a seconds hand and I like the dial layout better,

Dear all, thank you so much for your valuable opinions. I have now seen both in the boutiques and I have opted for neither...

I somehow cannot get myself to like the retrograde date on the 5496, while the dial of the 5327 is just too busy with the way all the information is displayed. Furthermore, due to its large bezel and the shape of the case it looks much smaller than its no...
