Should I buy a Nautilus?

 By: CrookedOak : December 14th, 2020-08:45
I know this almost sounds like a ridiculous question, but I am very interested to hear from the WatchProSite community. I am an avid watch collector and have a variety of watches from Patek, Rolex, Cartier and other manufacturers. I have never owned a wat...

Don’t even hesitate

 By: EinPa : December 14th, 2020-08:49

No brainer !

 By: GLau : December 14th, 2020-09:04
Buy it ASAP !

Is this a serious question/post? 😂

 By: Pretty Boy : December 14th, 2020-09:04
This is a no-brainer. I’m sure you will love it. Versatile, classy, sporty, elegant etc. If you don’t like it, you still can flip it at double list price. Best, V.

When you try it on tomorrow, if you like it, go for it.

 By: Watchlover78 : December 14th, 2020-09:10
When I try on a watch and I like it, 99% of the time I will go for it. And the Nautilus is so classy.

"Follow your heart".....

.... best answer

Thanks - This opportunity came so out of the blue I really haven't had the chance to process it.

I wasn't trying to be flippant, I am not educated on the Nautilus collection and I know many members are. My PP collection is predominantly from the Calatrava collection.

I think it's a nice watch at retail prices. Utterly bonkers at secondary market prices.

 By: vitalsigns : December 14th, 2020-09:20
If you like the watch (and even if you don't), economically, this is a no risk proposition for you. Cheers, John

Maybe it is just me

 By: Todd B. : December 14th, 2020-09:30
Maybe it's just me but the look of this watch has never appealed to me whatsoever.

It is your choice

 By: Weems@8 : December 14th, 2020-09:42
Buy what you like. I never understood a Nautilus. Thats because i like the Aquanaut. No ears on the Aquanaut made it for me.

you will love it!

 By: radone : December 14th, 2020-09:50
I bet you will! says a guy who owns both 5711 1A and R.

Considering you're even asking yourself this question already indicates you're not an ideal candidate for the Nautilus...

 By: patrick_y : December 14th, 2020-09:52
I probably sound like a broken record by now; people who buy watches at this level don't need to resort to asking other people's opinions. Especially from other people who don't know you personally, as they're not giving you tailored advice. You're likely...

Thanks - This opportunity came so out of the blue.

 By: CrookedOak : December 14th, 2020-09:56
I am not well versed on the Nautilus collection and I know many members are. My PP collection is predominantly from the Calatrava collection. I wanted to hear from other owners that have gotten past the hype.

As an owner who is past the hype...

 By: patrick_y : December 14th, 2020-11:04
I just wanted to provide this advice... Look at your timepieces. If they're all scratched up, you might want to reconsider on the Nautilus. The Nautilus is a scratch magnet. Meaning a Nautilus will get even more scratched up than a normal watch. And the N...

Thanks - good practical advice.

Love this reply, so candid and helpful

 By: Mostel : December 14th, 2020-19:02
I owned the Nautilus ... way back when the 5711 first came out. I was surprised at the finish, first and foremost. I could tell, the bracelet finish was not going to age well. There was a flimsiness to it as well that made me shake my head... I sold it pr...

Agreed Mostel, that bracelet is a nightmare!

 By: patrick_y : December 14th, 2020-21:35
A nice looking but totally impractical design. The polished parts STICK UP and get scratched, while the brushed parts are below where they won't get scratched... Exactly the opposite way to do it!

Agree

Very good point....

 By: @lberti : December 14th, 2020-11:23
One that i remember very well: A&L oddyseus

I think you are judging by the design only: the Oddyseus offers much more watchmaking than the 5711.

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 14th, 2020-11:30
I personally would buy the Lange, than the 5711. The 5711 is quite collectable since recently and that is a big part of its charme.

Voila, my first try on:

 By: @lberti : December 14th, 2020-12:55
I did like it back then and still like now. ...

Dream watch, I think you will like it when you try!

 By: JTCL : December 14th, 2020-10:10
But if you decide to pass it up, let me know, I can find a way to make both of us happy 🤗

Buy at least one :-)

May I ask a question?

 By: 1WatchMan : December 14th, 2020-12:17
You mentioned your AD, did you really mean AD or you meant Dealer? I'm basically asking for the price you're offered: retail or market? My take: - at retail: Yes, if you like it. - at market: No Let us know please what happens tomorrow 😉 Enjoy the process...

Great question - Authorized Dealer selling at published Patek Philippe retail (US $33,710)

 By: CrookedOak : December 14th, 2020-12:31
I wouldn't even consider the offer if it was being sold above retail.

Thanks for answering!👍🏻

 By: 1WatchMan : December 14th, 2020-19:46
So at retail, it's still an expensive watch, but it's definitely a fantastic one as well. As you have the opportunity to try it on, enjoy it and let's see what you feel with it on the wrist. And then make a decision, the risk is certainly low here, given ...

If they have a good relationship with the AD then the quick flip is something they would likely shy away from.

 By: Jay (Eire) : December 14th, 2020-15:51
I know for me I've been offered several easily flipped watches this year from my AD and I took none of them. For this very reason. I may be naive, but the AD appreciated the opportunity to go to the next person and potentially make them very happy and hop...

The watch was offered to 1-2 very good customers.

 By: CrookedOak : December 14th, 2020-16:48
Not the flipping crowd (no disrespect). If I’m not going to keep it, I’ll pass too.

it is a good watch imho, if you get it in retail - you should go for it !

 By: mahesh : December 14th, 2020-13:22
is it that good to pay way over retail...that is a personal choice on how much you like it. Best, mahesh.,

I would go for it.

As an owner....

 By: Jay (Eire) : December 14th, 2020-15:47
My 2 cents (be they dollar or euro) is that it's a great watch to wear, very comfy on the wrist, and arguably iconic in design. And super versatile, for me at least. But, it is way overpriced at retail. It was a stretch at retail prices when I purchased m...

Agreed. It's not even a good value at retail...

 By: patrick_y : December 14th, 2020-21:39
A steel Nautilus costs as much as a GOLD Rolex President Daytona. Yes, the Patek Philippe movement is better finished, but it's not THAT MUCH BETTER. And at that $33K price point, there are so many other fantastic watches one can get new or used. Did I me...

This may be frowned upon...

 By: jleno : December 14th, 2020-16:38
But I'd totally buy and flip it immediately after if given the chance to purchase at retail That being said, nothing wrong with keeping it either. Despite all the new entrants in the stainless steel sports category in recent years, the Nautilus and RO sti...

Your honesty is appreciated!

 By: patrick_y : December 14th, 2020-21:40
I bet a large percentage of people are thinking the same thing you're thinking, just too shy to mention it!

At that price, I’d buy it and wouldn’t think twice!

I wish I had that opportunity!

*** UPDATE ***

 By: CrookedOak : December 15th, 2020-10:00
I visited the AD this morning and was skeptical going in. I had almost talked myself out of the Nautilus. I tried it on and was sold. Why? 1. The blue/black dial in person is so much better than any picture I've seen. 2. The light nature of the watch and ...

Congrats!

Congratulations 👍

Thanks for the update and great to hear that the 5711 worked out well for you !

 By: GLau : December 15th, 2020-21:51
Often a watch is quite different in the metal. Glad that you reached out to the community to hear different comments and was then able to decisively make the purchase. The Nautilus complements the other piece in your collection. Enjoy it often !

100% your call

I always enjoy wearing my 3710.. The thinner case w/original bracelet fits beautifully; it’s always a pleasure and joy to wear it. Try on the model of your desire—-and make your choice. Yes or no

Enjoy your new purchase!!
