A bit of diversity in collection is good

Feb 03, 2021,06:49 AM

IMHO One watch alone cannot tick all the boxes.

Ideally a collection could be limited to about 5 pieces to essentially cover both manual and automatic calibers; independent vs marquee mainstream brand; complication vs simple three handers; bracelet vs leather straps.
And of course the joy of trying them on in rotation..
And then add that one more grail piece as it is bound to pop-up the very day that you think your collection is complete!!!

With time my Wonder Watch is bringing me more and more pleasure

 By: Mike H : February 2nd, 2021-17:16
After having had a certain number of watches, I realised one day that I was not enjoying each of them enough because I had simply too many and instead of being satisfied with acquiring one I was more and more frustrated. I decided that I had to upgrade my...

It has been my unreachable grail for 20 years before I can get it

...and I have been very lucky to find this specimen with this first generation dial (pearl minute track and embossed characters)

Love that crown!

So many details here - the PP on the crown, the inscribed circle defining the moonphase... Lovely. Best E.

You did exceptionally well with this nice One...

ultimately how many watches can we wear each time....one, at most 2 which others will start to raise eyebrows.

Great advice on “less is more”.

I think the Wonder Watch is one of the most beautiful elegant classic watches I have ever seen. Please post pics more often. Thanks very much. CB

Less is only more...

...when you can snag something of this caliber (no pun intended)... I think everyone of us has a short list of watches that, if acquired, would end the search and be the 'only watch.' Off the top of my head, my 2 would be the 5020J and the 5950A. Or a tot...

It’s a perfect watch

 By: baufoam : February 2nd, 2021-18:06
I have been looking at the 3448 for many years and just cannot “pull the trigger”. They are so expensive that I would be too intimidated by the price tag to enjoy the watch and wear it. They are spectacular and important examples of Patek Philippe at thei...

I've heard this argument...

 By: Mostel : February 2nd, 2021-19:04
No doubt a stunning keeper and a grail... but... me thinks the madness will keep the number in your collection higher than your post suggests! Chuckle! One wishes a grail ( or two or three) could quell the desire that never seems to stop... have you REALL...

That’s a very good question. I’ve asked myself the same question about the exit watch or grail watch.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 2nd, 2021-19:12
I thought I had my grail watch which was the 5270R.I had it for two years and sold it. It’s human nature. I don’t think there is such a thing as a grail watch. Your tastes change over time as do your attitudes toward watches. And with those changes come c...

Good answer, CPB and very real, I think

 By: Mostel : February 4th, 2021-16:47
It's true, ideas of 'what is a grail' change over time. I agree strongly less is more, in this case. 'Meaning' is the Grail itself. And so, those that mean the most, by definition, can't be very high in number, or else they are 'merely the ones that are '...

That’s perfect Mostel.

Between your idea and my idea we have pinned down exactly what the grail watch is! The grail is about the person’s perceptions of the watch. It’s the watch that makes you “content”. It’s the watch that makes you “whole” as a collector. It’s how you view t...

Masterpiece

I always admire this one. Flawless 🙏

I agree. Less can be more!

 By: patrick_y : February 2nd, 2021-20:31

If you had to sell a few to buy this one, I would agree that less is more.

 By: BigAppleBill : February 2nd, 2021-21:00
It’s beautiful! It could easily be the centerpiece of a very respectable collection of any size.

I am very HAPPY for you Mike

Enjoy it in the Best of Health for long long time ;-) Thanks also for sharing these so nice photos.

This is such a spectacular watch my friend, so thankful to have seen it in person a few times

I see your point and can understand your thoughts, i have also to many but i just can’t sell them (yet) they still bring a smile to my face when i see them but like you I can’t wear them as much as i want . Maybe one day i will be as wise as you and aim a...
