5950a thoughts. Am I being narrow-minded?
Dec 06, 2019,08:44 AM
I see that there's a 5950a coming up for auction, still sealed in its plastic baggie. I see that this very same watch was purchased at auction from a different auction house, in that baggie, four years ago. I think it's safe to bet that its next owner, who will pay a significant premium over what they would for a non-sealed example, will keep it in that baggie.
The 5950a is a wonderful, wonderful watch. There really, in my book, might not be anything better. So I can't help but think it's a disgusting shame that this superb, carefully-thought out, rare, and supremely wearable watch is just going to stay in that sealed baggie, never worn, never even wound, never even FONDLED, and serving not as a watch, not as a wearable piece of art, but just as an investment vehicle.
In fact, it kind of makes me sick, makes me say: Patek shouldn't even be going through the pains and care of MAKING these watches if this is how they're going to be treated. They might as well just issue bonds that say, "5950a" on them, save themselves the trouble, and allow the Patek market to flow with greater liquidity. Because it's clearly not about the watches.
Am I being narrow-minded about this?
