5905P

May 19, 2019,15:21 PM

No real bad choice between the two!

I like:
The usefulness of the calendar function
The heft of the platinum case
... and a little against the grain ... the automatic movement.

Neither watch will be future "classics" ... but that doesn't mean they're not wonderful pieces ... because they BOTH are.

This or that? 5905P vs 5172G

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-01:55
Two blue big hitter chronographs at comparable price point 5905: + Case with concave bezel 60 min counter Great heft Automatic Platinum Day/date 5172: + Movement/finishing Heritage Manual "Pure" "Future classic" What is your take? Recommendations? Thomas ...

5172!

 By: David_S : May 19th, 2019-02:03
For me it’s no contest. But I have a deep love for manual chronos, so I might not be totally objective. I also prefer the seringue hands. In any case, best of luck in your choice. You really can’t go wrong either way. Cheers, David

Thank you David!

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-02:10
For me too, manual chronographs are the epitome of horology. But still the 5905 is a mighty package for a small collection? 1-0 for 5172 then 😀

Still 5172, David?

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-02:13
I'm guessing "no" 🤩 ...

Funny you should ask...

 By: David_S : May 21st, 2019-06:52
This is mine I still see a 5172 in my future... ...

2-0 thank you!! [nt]

3-0 by a hair, then!

Where is JC when I need him?

5172

 By: joenghenry : May 19th, 2019-03:15
Patek manual chronograph is hard to beat. Though I agree the combination of automatic chronograph + annual calendar + concave bezel + platinum case is also very attractive. Best, Henry

The second 5270P owner to prefer 5172!

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-03:27
Interesting pattern.. There is certainly a shared DNA between them. + that concave bezel... Sadly the price doubles! 4-0 then ...

Another vote for the 5172

 By: galt : May 19th, 2019-03:44
1. Movement, a different level of watchmaking in my view also much more impressive to look at. 2. Proportions of the case (although with they kept it the same diameter as the old watch) 3. Dial is really classic and works so well in person. This is a watc...

Thanks, Galt!

Nice to hear from someone who has seen 5172 in the real world (I haven't). I think I somewhat disagree on point 2). I find the case of the 5960 and 5905 absolutely sublime, whereas I found the 5170 case a little bit bland (though superb in other areas). 5...

5905 on my wrist btw

How often you need chrono? How often date, day, month? WG gets yellow with time, platinum is always platinum. Best, Kari

Thanks, Kari!

1-5!! I have use for a chronograph almost daily, because I give lectures and host workshops all the time. It feels impolite to use my phone to check the timing, because I might come of as "distant". Also, I tell the attendees to put their phones away. Unf...

I have WG built after 2010

and the colour has turned a bit towards yellow. The easy way of seeing it is to place the object next to platinum. Best, Kari

I do like the 5930

See picture taken at Bjerke With a free choice I'd probably go 5270 though ...

My friend took delivery this month...

...and I’ve tried it on. Had I the funds I would jump on it in a FLASH. It is a stunning piece.

A future classic for sure

Would fit your collection well, Fram!!

5172

 By: KonaJ : May 19th, 2019-07:45
The 5905’s height and diameter are a bit big for my wrist but the platinum is spectacular to look at! I seldom wear my 5930, too busy? The 5270 also spend a lot of time in the safe. Just picked up Lange’s version of the 5170, love the simple, no date layo...

6-1

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-08:10
Thank you! I'm a former 1815 chrono 1 gen owner and I completely understand your choice. Movement side is certainly superior. Pushers as well. I prefer a white dial though, that they don't offer for some reason. Thomas

Tough choice

 By: keks : May 19th, 2019-08:08
One is sportier and automatic and other is more classic and manual. Quite different even though similar at first glance. I would go 5170P personally..... but if choice is solely between these two then I would vote 5905 for its modern look and superior met...

Thank you Keks

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-08:14
I've been waiting for you to weigh in! I was decided on the 5170P, but I was not able to fund it in time. I think my AD still has one though... 6-2 then. Thomas

5170P is very high on my want list

 By: keks : May 19th, 2019-08:17
Slim profile and beautiful dial makes it a stunner. Hour markets are tastefully done even if diamonds ... Good luck choosing!

So you vote left side here?

Both my wrist: ...

Yes yes

Double yes! 5170P all the way !

5905P all the wsy

 By: Patekphilippecollector : May 19th, 2019-08:30
Chrono is pretty useless function and at least the 5905 has annual calendar. I am too lazy to wind a watch and havent yet had a metaphysical experience adjusting my watch or manually winding it ....P is always king of the metals

6-3 getting more even

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-08:49
The 5905 chrono is very legible and more usable than most. P has a great heft. Thomas

.

The lugs are WAY different...

 By: GreatPilot@me.com : May 19th, 2019-09:50
The 5172 lugs are stamped like the 5320 perpetual and ruins it for me, while I like the 5172 the 5905 would win out with it’s platium case, complications and automatic. IMHO the 5172 will never get to “future classic”...Jim

Thank you, Jim.

 By: Thomahof : May 19th, 2019-10:16
I don't think 5905 will rise to future classic either, but it's quite the package in sum! 7-4

Well said Thom [nt]

5172...

 By: mdg : May 19th, 2019-13:08
...love the manual in-house movement and the hands are growing on me. It would be killer in platinum and/or with Breguet numerals. One can dream : )

8-4 😱

I'm thinking I'm similar ways as you... Hmm..

Do you have any other chronographs in your collection

 By: gregnascimento : May 19th, 2019-17:45
Last year I was torn between the 5905 (black dial) and the 5170 (white gold). Both are GREAT pieces. My collection includes an ALS 1815 chrono so I felt the 1815 ticked the box for "pure chrono" in the collection. So, to help with your decision I might su...

8-7 thanks!

 By: Thomahof : May 20th, 2019-06:59
I fully agree on the 1815chr, which I have owned before. Better finishing and nicer pushers for half price are some of the arguments in favor of that alternative! Thomas

Wrap up: 8-8 😀😀

 By: Thomahof : May 20th, 2019-07:03
To wrap up: Based on your feedback I'm now at 52/48 in favor of the 5905. The most important asset is for me the case and the material + of course the combination of functions. Both heavy hitters in the chronograph segment, equally loved by the Purist com...

quite a battle....

 By: keks : May 20th, 2019-11:26
did not expect this outcome to be frank as the community here seemed far more in favor of the 5172 at first....

I didn't reply earlier because I couldn't make a decision

 By: 1WatchMan : May 20th, 2019-22:09
Purist community said the same 😅 To me it's all about what you're looking for and how you feel them on the wrist. For me particularly, with my current collection, I would go with the 5172. Remove the 5960 from my collection and 5905 would be my pick.

Thanks!

 By: Thomahof : May 20th, 2019-23:20
5960 is out of my collection now. That's an important reason for looking towards 5905! Thomas

By a split hair, yes

 By: Thomahof : August 19th, 2019-12:08
Platinum heft + I prefer the 5905 hands. But I'm a huge 5960 fan. Have owned the A, and been very close to pulling the trigger on the grey P several times.

5905 as a daily 5172 for a collection piece

 By: rip9er : May 21st, 2019-16:22
I find the 5905 the superior watch if you plan on wearing it frequently. Not only does it have very useful functions but it’s also automatic. 5172 being a manual wind is the emotional choice. Not practical but stunning to look at. Here’s the twist. White ...

5905P...make sense with the fly back!

 By: mahesh : August 19th, 2019-13:57
If I’ve to choose a pure chronograph, I’m sorry 5172G 🤐 1815 chronograph WG black dial or original Dato Pt has fabulous finished manually wound movements or if it has to be PP the a 5070G...imho Best, Mahesh.,

Voting here for 5905P [nt]

 By: Tifosi99 : August 19th, 2019-14:10

5172 for me due to the more casual look.

 By: rip9er : August 21st, 2019-19:59
That’s the reason I also like the 5960A /G over the P. The hands make the watch more youthful like a elegant sports watch. If I wear formal suits on a regular basis which I don’t I’d probably go for the more elegant 5905.

Very difficult to decide, because they are...
