I like the causal option and that dial on the 5320 just works for me.

Torn between 2 Perpetual options 5320G vs 5140p 017 (grey)-what would you do?

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-15:15
I’m finally getting some AD love after years of collecting and being listed. Next step with PP is to get one of the Patek complication par excellence, the perpetual calendar.(as I already have the chrono 5170p and the world time 5110p. ) I do like both op...

I this isn't the "right answer"...

 By: BigFatPauli : July 3rd, 2021-15:18
But I really love the dial colour on the 5140p oh so much that I am willing to overlook the odd printing choice so that's the way I personally would go.

Thanks man.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-15:26
Yes I have seen there are some font issues that have been discussed. Nothing that bothers me at all when seeing the watch in the metal. And yes the dial is truly spectacular charcoal. And still super subtle.

Thanks naut- 2-0 for the 5140p charcoal.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-15:31
What bothers you with the 5320 if anything? For me it’s the to many winks to the past. What I like is the simplicity and readability and the complex case.

I know! I love it. Could really be the dark horse here.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-15:33
But if I asked you about the 2 others and you HAD to choose?

5320G 👍

 By: FRAMII : July 3rd, 2021-15:44

Thanks!

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-17:34
This is going Salomonic I think 🤔

Not an easy call and you'll end up with a pretty gorgeous watch either way, but given your description I'd probably suggest the 5140P....

 By: FabR : July 3rd, 2021-15:31
First, its really remarkable degree of elegance (even though I admit I like the 5320 dial better -- one of the most original among all Patek PCs! ;-) Second, the 5140P has a modern yet very classical design, which will forever be good looking...your next ...

Pleasure :-) On a curious (and unrelated) technical note, I was trying to figure out how you could display the 5320 picture on the Patek page and the 5140 on the Front page...(normally this isn't possible).

 By: FabR : July 3rd, 2021-15:47
It shows me you only selected the 5320 picture, so if you want it also on the Front page let me know....Otherwise let's leave it like this, which looks cool (the system might automatically change the front picture at some point anyway ;-) Cheers.

Hi Fabr it does give some irregularities when posting from the app

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-17:32
Only one picture made it through and then I edited and added the next one.

👍🙏🥂

 By: FabR : July 3rd, 2021-22:44

For me, te 5230 because it is less busy with the apertures and

 By: GLau : July 3rd, 2021-15:40
no compressed numerals. Personally I always prefer a cleaner dial with apertures.

I am with you.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-22:04
But PP are the best to make a cluttered dial look like it makes sense.

Some people also like a seconds hand

 By: Patekphilippecollector : July 3rd, 2021-15:45

Yes true-👍

5140 if only because it will 'age' better...

 By: mdg : July 3rd, 2021-15:48
...but a nice problem to have : )

Yeah. You’re right. Not the worst problem to have.

Thanks for super valuable feed back everyone.

Thanks Nico. Your point of view is always precious.

I think we have a plan!

Oui j’espère bientôt.

5320

 By: blau : July 3rd, 2021-15:50
Here's why: it's got its own thing going. And it looks great! I love its sporty/vintagey/casual vibe and have been surprised it hasn't been a huge screaming sells-over-retail success. The 5140 is great, too... but, to my eye, it's a slightly lesser versio...

I agree the dial painted colour makes it a bit cartoonish. Also in real life. What happened to Grand Feu enamel?

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-19:51
Will just have to live with that I think. Not the worse after all. I think it will age with grace with the blackened gold indices.

For me the 5320G without hesitation.

 By: MTR : July 3rd, 2021-16:16
It has it’s own style and stands alone with it’s design. I tried it about two years ago. I felt that it was very versatile and had a great wrist presence, too. And then there is your personal next generation… 😊 Best Thomas ...

If you are able, try them on first

 By: houstonian : July 3rd, 2021-16:41
They fit very differently. 37 vs 40. Long straight lugs vs downward sloping short lugs. The 5320 is a cream color that borders on yellow, just fyi. Here are photos to help. Sorry the 5140 is rose and not platinum, but hopefully this gives you an idea of t...

Thank you Houston-

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-18:05
Yes I did try them on and live both for different reasons. What is your choice?

5320 would get my vote

 By: houstonian : July 3rd, 2021-19:13
Like baufoam says below, I think the 3940 does “classic Patek” better than the 5140

I get it Houston! Thanks a lot!

Yes or maybe with an enamel dial!!

Completely agree here.

But since I am also listening to my family’s emotion here in this particular case, your opinion and the forum are really important players. 🙏amazing

Well, I look forward to learning your final pick!

The 5320g.

 By: baufoam : July 3rd, 2021-17:09
Not a doubt in my mind. I have been wearing the 5320 as a daily watch for over two years and I like it more today than I did when I bought it ( new) from an AD in Beverly Hills. I paid full retail for the watch and have not regretted that decision. As a P...

Nice point with the 3940 and your 5320 history.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-17:45
Really good advice. Thanks. Conclusion: get the 5320 now and chase a first edition 3940 next year maybe😀

Check and thanks. I have no issues with smaller cases.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-17:51
Sizes have become a minor issue as you mature as a collector I think. As long as the sum of elements add up so to speak.

Most importantly

 By: sham1 : July 3rd, 2021-17:26
which watch fits your wrist better? The 5320 is 40mm while the 5140 is 37mm in diameter, quite a difference. How important is legibility to you because the 5320 is a lot more legible compared to the dial of the 5140. For me I would go for the 5140 as I ha...

Thanks Sham-thank you WPS

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-18:02
They both fit well and I do like the ultra thin understated feel of the 5140p I want to thank the forum for the invaluable input!!!

Yeah really great quality feed back all over-what a true collector's forum! I did learn a lot by turning it around here-

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 6th, 2021-06:10
Still not sure what we're going to end up with though 😂 In Denmark we say that you are now confused, but on a higher level.

Putting all the comments you received together, I think the most compelling argument that can be made is one in favor of....buying both references! ;-))

 By: FabR : July 6th, 2021-06:25
Seriously, these are two terrific Patek grand complications, and being confused after receiving so much feedback and information just confirms that whichever you end up choosing, you'll have made an informed decision that you cannot regret! ;-) Keep us po...

Well said my friend!

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 6th, 2021-08:09

5140p subdials are too congested for my taste. I prefer the 5320g layout, but you have to love that dial color, I think.

 By: LK : July 3rd, 2021-17:43
I know the question is about perpetual calendars, but have you consider an annual calendar? This is a complication strongly associated with Patek, and there are additional options in terms of layout and color.

I had the same about the 5140p and the congestion.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-17:57
But seeing it live is just very different and it seemed very elegant and not disturbing. And yes this probably might affect legibility.

I’m sure it will. I saw the blue -001 and the slate grey -017

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 3rd, 2021-20:52
Blue is great and a bit too shiny. Plus we’ve seen so much blue lately. The grey just emits class and refinement and matches the pt well.

Both are great. That particular 5140p is a real treasure, and the look of white figures on a gray dial is just fantastic. That said...

 By: vitalsigns : July 3rd, 2021-19:03
The 5320 is crossover casual watch that you can easily wear with dressy or casual attire. For a perpetual calendar, that's a real strength. I really enjoy watches you can wear with just about anything--makes for many more opportunities to enjoy the watch....

always a personal decision

 By: GirlAndHerWatches : July 3rd, 2021-20:52
and these two watches, besides being a perpetual calendar are so different! My vote is 5320G, it's actually so different and unique in today's collection yet is historical.

it's actually, in my opinion, lot better in person than in pictures

 By: GirlAndHerWatches : July 3rd, 2021-21:59
it feels more complete and just right

I love the unique look of the 5320. It’s a heavy hitter because it’s perpetual yet it It has a casual look.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : July 4th, 2021-00:11
I love that. It’s a stealthy watch. It’s very legible which is an added luck in your decision. You’re in a great position.

Yes. Definitely legible.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : July 4th, 2021-21:34
Sometimes I think the Patek PCs have a legibility problem. The 5320 does not. It’s high kn my list for my next Patek.

Wonderful retrograde Patekova!

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 4th, 2021-08:11
I’ve been looking at that too.

PP5140P

 By: cmclee : July 4th, 2021-03:01
I see you are fine with either dial besides both models are about the same price range. Therefore, I think the PP5140P would be it. Firstly, the white prints over grey background makes the dial more interesting and less bothered by the 'irregular' fonts, ...

Thanks for your valuable input-

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 6th, 2021-05:49
Yes given that the price of the 5140p was the same due to not being in the catalog anymore is certainly an argument-among all the other horological of course-

I’ve seen the 5140P-17 in the metal…

 By: Chromatic Fugue : July 4th, 2021-04:05
and my major impression was that it was hard to see the hands against the dial; serious legibility issue there. That said, many people don’t care as much about legibility as I do.

I get it. I think it’s a balance for PP to sacrifice some legibility to make it look more simple.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 4th, 2021-07:24
I was really surprise in how uncluttered the traditional style perpetual layout looked on the 5140. Extreme balance is also a way to deal with clutter and I wonder today if the 3940 doesn’t do that job par excellence. Photo credit private seller on Chrono...

Agreed, but just to be clear

 By: Chromatic Fugue : July 4th, 2021-13:44
I wasn’t talking about the legibility of the subdials. I was taking about the legibility of the silver-colored hour and minute hands against the gray dial. I found it hard to tell the time without moving my wrist around to make the hands catch the light. ...

Ok, bear with me…

 By: Chimaera : July 4th, 2021-08:49
I would get the 5320, and then stretch your budget and get a 5146p also. They are not at crazy prices, and I love mine - the grey dial is super and (to pick up the point on legibility) the AC dial is slightly less cluttered than the 5140 and there is (ele...

I understand that you, who already own a chronograph and world time, will want a perpetual calendar next time.

 By: anaroku : July 5th, 2021-04:13
properties even in the same perpetual calendar category. As many have already said, 5320 and 5140 have quite different. The 5320 is a rare model with an easy-to-read calendar window as a perpetual calendar and, after all, an independent second hand. I cur...

Since 5140-017 is gray, you may think that the time is a little easier to read than the black 5140-013.

 By: anaroku : July 5th, 2021-04:24
However, although it tends to be a little in the dark, on the contrary, in a slightly bright place, he tends to shine more brightly in gray and bury the outline of the needle. Still, of course, both have a brilliant presence that the 3940 does not have. ...

Thanks. Yes the reflections seem to take care of the legibility on the modern pateks.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 5th, 2021-06:37
You just twist the watch a little and get good readability.

5320G

 By: Jeff_M : July 8th, 2021-23:35
I like the causal option and that dial on the 5320 just works for me.

Yeah it’s beautiful.

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 9th, 2021-19:11
I think the play and complexity of the stepped lugs with the case and straight cut sapphire is something that will fascinate most fans. I think Tim from Watchbox went down with this one😂in one of his presentations. Nice

I have to say that both PC actually are great in…

 By: Erg2000 : July 10th, 2021-11:05
…different ways. The 5320 has the best legibility and fits for every occasion. The 5140p has the best and most elegant grey sunburst dial ever. Its funny to read this post, because the 5320 was my first PC and I later added the 5140P. Congratulations for ...

Thanks Erg! So you have them both? Amazing

 By: jlc.thomsen : July 10th, 2021-21:05
And if you HAD to choose just one and they were priced the same?

I'd prefer the 5320, if I had to choose one. It's the best perpetual calender for the money.

 By: Erg2000 : July 12th, 2021-09:57
But also keep in mind that the 5140P is not produced anymore.

5320

 By: Poky : July 10th, 2021-11:30
As much as the two markers at 5 and 7 annoy me (IMO completely unnecessary to have them), the rest of the watch is really nice and very legible.

Thank all you for your valuable input and advice!!

Although I adore the 5140/3940, I have always been quite smitten with the 5320G.

We use “heirloom” for most coffees from Ethiopia because we cannot determine the dna and provenance exactly . They are a mix of wild and not wild cultivars reflecting a very long evolution of different species. but they are still so typical for Ethiopia. ...

Huge congrats to you! Excellent choice!

 By: Mike H : July 16th, 2021-18:28
But to be honest they were 2 good options anyhow Glad that you could pull the trigger after being torn between the two, it is sometimes the most difficult choice (not to decide, but to renounce ). Well done, you will enjoy it tremendously!

Thanks a lot Mike.
