Should I conclude the year with a nice piece ?

But currently I’m torn between a few patek watches. Any insights from fellow Purists is more then welcome. I must admit that I’m very charmed by this 3971J and its 36mm vintage size. The same for the 3940 and its salmon dial. The 5207P seems to be the obv...

3940

I know it's not the powerhouse of this group, but I've always found this reference endlessly charming.

5970r if it was my choice.

M.

Personally I would go with

 By: keks : December 20th, 2018-12:35
Either the salmon 3940 if the size wears well on the wrist, alternatively the 5970R... very different from each other so comes down to what fits the best in the box.... all amazing pieces so tough to go wrong...

Like all others i would go for the 3940 with that stunning Salmon dail 👌🏻

Although this PP 5270 is gorgeous too ...

Another vote for the 3940 salmon dial

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 20th, 2018-13:39
Next to the 3970 it looks most classic Patek. 5970 and 5270 are very, very nice but more modern Pateks.

3940 is awesome

Personally I wouldn't choose salmon, I would go silver, but if you like salmon that's the one!

Personally

I'd go for the 5270 hands down. I don't see the porthole problem at all. ...

3940 salmon dial - is this a limited release?

5970R... [nt]

 By: KSP : December 20th, 2018-17:34
Out of the four, I like the 5970R mainly because of the case size and shape. I like the versatility of the watch, it wears well with jeans or suit..

3940

 By: MC : December 20th, 2018-19:07
Maltie the image that you are showing as a 3940 is actually a 5140, same movement with a larger case so the dates 5 and 27 are smaller. A beautiful watch indeed and a great choice!

Your photo is a 5140

 By: MC : December 21st, 2018-04:42
Suggest you ask seller for a photo of Patek cert to be sure. The 5140 is only 1mm larger and also has a convex bezel instead of the concave bezel of the 3940.

Go for it !! [nt]

 By: MC : December 21st, 2018-06:46

But you got me confused

 By: Maltie : December 21st, 2018-12:37
How about the smaller 5 and 27?

That’s why I thought it was a 5140

 By: MC : December 21st, 2018-12:52
The normal 3940 does not have this issue. If you ask the dealer if the bezel is is convex or concave that will be another clue. Also ask if the case is 36mm or 37mm. The cert says it is a 3940, but if it has the characteristics of the 5140 then it is an a...

It's not an anomaly

All 175 year jubilee 3940G are like this. But is it really a 3940 when it is a re edition with a different dial than the original? I think it's a little strange to be honest. Thomas

Patek 175th anniversary 3940

 By: MC : December 21st, 2018-17:43
For Saatchi in London, 36mm case, concave bezel, modified 5140 dial to fit smaller case, less than 20 made, two backs, deployant buckle, and winding box. Does it get more special than that?

Sublime this salmon

!

I have seen the 3940 salmon dial

worn by one of the five lucky owners (a fellow purist actually) and although I am not normally partial to the 3940, this version looked stunning. I know one for sale in the UK so I assume that is the one you are targetting. The price has been terribly inf...

3940

 By: Chimaera : December 21st, 2018-23:34
Yes, that’s me. It is a 3940 (not a 5140) but the dial is a unique mixture of 3940 and 5140 elements. The movement bears the Geneva (not PP) seal, reflecting that these pieces were “resurrected” for the Saatchi exhibition. I love it, and if there’s one ou...

Never sale it my friend!

One of the best looking perpetual calendars ever!!

A 5207P!...out of production now so it might cost you a lot!!! :)

Oops typo 😊 [nt]

Go for it. It's your passion. It needs to become a reality. 😅

Merry Christmas. Geross 😉

3971 looks like it has a 2 tone dial, with the registers at 3 and 9 a different color. If so, that would go with it likely being a1st series 3971, which would have a snap back.

 By: patekova : December 21st, 2018-06:11
1st series are extremely rare and likely most have solid case backs. If mint, first series and complete I would go with that. Otherwise 5970R.

Yes indeed the registers are in a different color

 By: Maltie : December 21st, 2018-06:37
And this is the caseback of the 3971J ...

Interesting, especially if the color difference appears that way in person, versus appearing that way only in a photo because of the recessed registers.

 By: patekova : December 21st, 2018-06:58
That said, since it is not a snap back, my personal choice would be the iconic 5970 in any metal. Not saying any one of the 4 choices you present is better than the others - just my own preference. I must add though, that aesthetically for me, the most be...

case size, vintage or modern to balance out or focus on the theme, movement, and price (if price is a consideration). For me, I love the vintage hamburgers 5970 and 3970 with leminia movements and their price points. Have fun in your selection.

Interesting.....

This is the first time I have heard anyone refer to the 5970 as a hamburger. 3970.....yes. But first time I heard anyone describe the 5970 like that.

5970 is a Whopper
