Dear All,

Based on what has been shown at SIHH\Basel, 2009 seems to be the year of consolidation.

New Novelties seem to lack class and charm. Is this a sign of the times? I wonder whether it is symptom of:

- marketing departments pumping out mass market gimicks when after the initial sensory high most pieces fall into obscurity.
- too much variation of the same song.

Or am I just becoming to fussy and cynical as a collector.

I just look at these below and count my blessings.

My next Rolex won't be a new one, but a Vintage.

I didn't see any appealing new Rolex Watch, this year, if I / we did see all.

It is, actually, a good thing, as it will allow us to complete our collection with some nice Vintage pieces.



A year of consolidation, obviously...

great that some of you enjoy vintage watches, but why knock what Rolex does with their new offerings without any evidence of what the general buying public think.

I for one had given up on Rolex with their 36mm watches that for me looked too small on my average wrist. I tried a WG Daytona but could not live without a date function. The DSSD released last year changed my perception of Rolex and am really happy with the new up to date line of larger watches.

Give this great quality company a go you guys!!

I don't know what to think of Rolex. I like the larger cased sports watches, though I am not a fan of the DSSD. I think the larger case works on the MIlgauss because there was no current Milgauss model that it replaced. But on the Datejust and Day Date I simply do not believe the proportions of the larger case work at all. In particular, I find the bezels flat and blunt, and I find the lug width too narrow. On the new Datejust dials, the "maxi" stick markers share the "bluntness" I dislike.

It's a shame. I understand Rolex's move to bigger cases and I don't indict them for it. In fact, I admire them. But I am not a fan of the execution.

What a great three some !!  I wonder if the watches of today will have the same apeal in 30-40 years from now as the vintage ones have now ? The daytona was not extremely popular in the old days, but the models from the past became the grails of today. Would this happen to the modern ones too ?  Is it a design trick that needs to mature first ? Or is it just a sentimental thing that we want to be reminded to the (our) past ?

you can't compare those glorious vintage pieces to things with ROLEXROLEXROLEX written all in the inner ring!

Actually, I do like the new Rolexes, I think I could wear one of the larger DD's, not ones we've seen yet, but ones I know are coming... I like the larger size, and the continuation of classic design.

But... I'll never like that 'writing!' and they will never compare to the great classics like those you posted. However, isn't there a 42mm daytona with date in the works? I'm looking forward to that, maybe next year...

Hi Jeff,

I recently came across a 6265 but was put off by the asking price...a nice piece which I always have in mind.

The combination of main white dial and the 3 black dials gave it a classic look which appeal to me, not to mention the manual movements.

Could u PM me on the current value of this vintage piece please?

The price quoted to me was with original box and paper.
