This 390 strikes me as a more wearable (44mm) version of 372. Only major difference appears to be the sandwich dial.
Why was this 390 a limited edition? Was it commemorating the opening of a new boutique?
No. The "boutique's" model reference start with a 4....
...Florence 411 and so on. The 390 was "only" the first model that could ONLY be bought in a Panerai boutique (there were only a handful of them). A "special" edition acquirable in a boutique, by just walkIng in and asking for one, was unprecedented. All the limited/special editions, disappeard, long before being released. No "saint" in paradise and no "accordion" like wallet, no JOY. Strong message to the AD and the speculators in general. In Panerai circles in Italy, the 390 is called...piacione=the likeable. It has ALL the features a Panerista WOULD enjoy, luminor 44 case, tobacco dial and faux tritium. All this at an affordable price. The "have nots" queued up, around the block

Reading more as in, you might be interested in getting one? I've seen it, worn it...loved it but, alas I couldn't buy it. My collection didn't allow for models like that one,sigh

At this point, since I have and want to keep the 372, there’s no room for 390. If I did want this, then I’d have to sell others.

That's great information! I did not know this. I had been travelling to Italy a lot for work and I figured it was time for a proper Italian watch. I stumbled across this PAM 390 and loved the simplicity, the chocolate brown dial and hints of rose fold on the hands. It is my first and so far only Paneria and I really love it...
