Favorites of mine, off the top of my head, are: Beth Gibbons from Portishead, Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins, and Sia Furler from her work with Zero 7. The trip-hop genre is practically a breeding ground for breathy, pop, chanteuses.

I liked early Eurythmics (and The Tourists!) and Annie Lennox is a very compelling live performer, particularly in recent years. I agree with your comments about John Prine as well.
The Cowboy Junkies “200 More Miles” provides some great live performances, if you haven’t heard it already.

“Me and Mrs Jones” was originally on Billy’s fourth album: “360 Degrees of Billy Paul” and is also included on “ The Best of Billy Paul”. Are there many other songs about adultery? I believe it was very controversial at the time (1972). The follow up single to was “Am I Black Enough for You?" which, as you can imagine, also put the cat amongst the pigeons back then.
Thanks for your list. I have the Gorecki symphony, and you have given me some other ideas.

Great selection, Nicolas, and I will forgive you for giving us more than 5.
I never expected to find someone else still listening to Thomas Dolby’s Aliens album. It is probably the most quirky album I own, but the songs are so catchy and the production excellent. Any only Thomas Dolby could write a love song called “My brain is like a sieve”, the best Ferrari tribute song ever or an observation on “Pop Culture” like no other.
For those who don’t know it, here is a selection of the lyrics:
My Brain Is Like A Sieve (Chorus)
My brain is like a sieve
sometimes it's easier to forget
all the bad things you did to me, you did to me.
My brain is like sieve
but it knows when it's being messed with
if you wanted you could come in,
so come in.
The Key To Her Ferrari (Introduction)
I don't want your love
don't want your money
I just want the key to your Ferrari
don't want your bed
don't want your body
I said all I want is the key to your Ferrari
Pop Culture (Introduction)
I drove all over Hollywood
looking at the stars
First I ate my Milky Way
and then I ate my Mars
but sucking on a Galaxy
I noticed something pretty bizarre
there’s not a lot of people there,
Just an awful lot of cars.
Hi All,
Thanks to all who contributed suggestions and particularly to those who described why certain records were important to them. There was a diverse range of music presented and you have given me lots of ideas – and hopefully you will all be broadening you listening repertoire because of this post.
Kind regards,
Andrew
