Most of his books are mysterious and enigmatic to me
.. but Hard Boiled especially. It's the one where the chapters go back and forth between the 'real' world of Tokyo and the dream state, including the protagonist's shadow. There is an intersection of these worlds at the end, but it's hard to know what it all means.

What I find interesting is he said he realized he could write novels during a baseball game. And there always seems to be a young girl who gets a mental illness and commits suicide in his novels. He seems obsessed with this character. I've stopped reading him but Wind-up Bird used to be my favourite novel.
