Celebrating the 52nd Anniversary of first Moon landing…

 By: Subexplorer : July 21st, 2021-18:43
… and remembering those three brave men aboard Apollo XI who dared to risk their lives to fulfill that most awesome achievement for Humankind.

Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, true heroes.

I will never forget the thrill, excitement and awe viewing those blurred scenes through the screen of our B&W TV seated by my dad that night.

I invite all our friends to join the celebration with a favorite Speedy!
Cheers! Abel

True heroes of our time.
I’m sure that they would appreciate your tribute.
I salute them !

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful example…

…dear Captain! These men surely deserve our tribute.
I can see the characteristic bevel inside lire lug of a CB case there? Do I see well?
Cheers my friend!

Keep enjoying yours so much!
Cheers! Abel

While I don't have a Speedy yet, my favorite . . .

 By: Dr No : July 21st, 2021-19:36
. . . (aside from a NASA-issued 105.012, of course!) would be the A.C.P.  This example . . .

. . . was posted by Anotol a few years back.

Why the A.C.P.?  Because the dial was made especially for a private group of auto enthusiasts in Peru.  Our So Cal alphabet soup gang tried to persuade Omega to produce a Speedmaster especially for us with the Greek letters ⍶βɣ (alpha beta gang) where 'A.C.P.' appeared on the dial, below 'Professional', but to no avail.  So we settled . . .

. . . for t-shirts instead.

The ACP marked are truly scarce and coveted pieces indeed…

… dear Art! That would be a great choice indeed.
Of course I would also love to own a NASA issued example. But I feel it would be an out of my reach financial possibility and probably an invitation to an FBI visit! Lol!
Cheers! Abel

Definitely a special Speedmaster ...

One for the collection !

If memory serves correct, there were only fifty made . . .

 By: Dr No : July 22nd, 2021-06:57
. . . and there's an owner's registry with a confirmed population well short of that number.  Our HSTE has an A.C.P., and Anotol owned one in the past.

A few years ago, a tattered A.C.P. was offered on eBay.  The seller was in Peru, and if my memory is to be trusted, it went for ~ $20K.

It’s a cool Speedmaster ...

Not a lot of people know that !

In America we celebrate the Fourth of July. In Peru . . .

. . . Omega's agent celebrates the Second.

Hopefully he’s organising a reissue 🤔

He'll need all the luck in the world. Omega turned us down . . .

. . . with an order for ten Speedies with a dial like this:

Looks good 👍

There's supposed to be a Greek letter gamma . . .

 By: Dr No : July 22nd, 2021-18:57
. . . in there as well.  Alphabet soup gang transliterates to ⍶βɣ.

Omega declined to indulge us.  So we had to settle . . .

. . . for t-shirts instead.

smile

At least you got the T-shirt 😎

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 22nd, 2021-19:53

The T shirt looks great!

I don’t know the policy of Omega to accept or refuse an order for an special marking on dial.
May be it requires a large order or perhaps they don’t accept that at all.

From my conversations with a boutique manager, Omega is willing . . .

. . . to engrave cases, and has done so recently for a group of collectors.  But customized dials?  No such luck.

Interesting to know that dear Art. I imagine that dial ..

I can’t but love the Speedmaster, in almost all it’s iterations.

I just watched last night a Netflix documentary called Mission Control which focused on the ground crew for the various space programs of that era.  It’s good viewing if you have access to it.

Also, and I think I mentioned this to you before but in case I didn’t there is a Podcast called the Brady Hayward Podcast which have several episodes on the Apollo 11 mission.  The person behind the podcast is a forensic engineer and so it’s about unpacking disasters.  For the Apollo 11 series they used mostly the real audio from mission control and the astronauts to tell the story.  With some narration to fill in the gaps.

For me I don’t see NASA and these missions the same way as others do.  The real breakthroughs happened before I was born, and so I think that feeling of awe or amazement is just not there.  But I’ve been slowly watching and reading stuff and gaining some interest in what happened 50 years ago!

Thank you so much for your comments…

… and interesting info about film and podcasts Jay!
I can well understand you. I was 20 years old in July 1969 and as most people received those images and news in newspapers and TV with awe and admiration. It was an engineering miracle and a mix of science and something we have only been reading in fiction books for many years.
Guess the impact in common citizens around the world was similar though of course some people thought that it never happened and all was staged.
I personally had the feeling that I was viewing a piece of History which I would be able to tell my children and grandchildren some day.
Thank you for joining the celebration Jay!
Best cordial regards
Abel
