well... i think its about that time, getting my first tourbillon and ive debated between quite a few brands and settled on the "jlc Master Tourbillon" first of all, a "see thru" tourbillon is a must for me which cancelled out quite a few competitors but the characteristics that sealed the deal are the rotor w/ hole and the amazing date jump feature.

but now down to the tough part, every WATCH i daily wear is steel.. ive never been one for precious metals... (but i dont mind a nice pearl/rose gold)...

but for a tourbillon, i feel maybe with such a nice complication i should go gold so its more of a classic piece... eventho i own no other rose/pearl gold pieces/accessories.

as you can see im confused.... should i go with my usual and get a complicated piece in a very simple/bland standard metal? or for just slightly more get it in gold? i appreciate your comments on the matter as well... the only reference i have so far is a friend whos really big into "tourbillons" who said... "a tourbillon in steel is just a crime... get gold" but im very open to read other's thoughts..

ideas about difference... i prefer white metals w/ blue accents, makes the steel nice.. but the hands are not blued.. and therefore do not contrast the dial.. ?hard to read?

the gold has contrasting hands.. but has a red accented date hand and blue accents in the movement... ?too many colors?

oh the dilemma!

my mind is everywhere and i keep forgetting details...

on the seconds hands above the one is blue and the other two are polished.. (very nice) but on other pics from JLC i see that they are all blue and one just has a lil point at the end (confusing)

if i were to buy the piece now and have it come right from JLC... which setup would it have.. which one is the "old design" and which "new"

Which is also an interesting solution...But a bit pricey...
So between the SS and the Rose Gold, which one?
One is " affordable" and price apart, it's also, IMHO, the most coherent in a chromatic point of view, with these little and subtile but nice touches of blue.
SS and Tourbillon?
Why not!
The SS is maybe easier to wear than the Rose Gold, with jeans or with a suit....
The Rose Gold is indeed the natural choice, fora Tourbillon.it gives this watch a retro look, somethong very dressy, elegant and pleasant to wear.
BUT, as you said, I'm not a big fan of these touches of red and blue...
This is just a matter of taste, and go on the version that speaks more to you, and to oyur style of life, which is also very important.
As for the color of the hands, I didn't notice that JLC came from a polish pair of hands to a blue one, or the contrary...
For me the hands were always the same color and finish, AFAIK.

both steel and god are very affordable. I find the platinum a lil over the top.

As far as hands I was referring to the three prong seconds hand. Some versions have 1blue and 2 polished. Others have all three blue. As far as the hour/minute hand they are all polished on the steel version.

I was saying the one prong blue is much nicer looking that the all three prong blues.

From a technical standpoint, I'm guessing this and other tourbillon pieces don't have a hacking seconds hand when crown pulled?

for somebody who is big into "tourbillions" the natural reaction to a steel ( affordable ) version would of course be a CRIME !  Just think about all those money he has spent and now they make it in steel for less than half the price ?

But for someone who doesnt already own tourbillions , having a nice affordable piece in SS is a refreshing thought indeed ! 

Just my 2 cents . Its essentially the same watch in different metals so its not as subjective as comparing 2 different makes .

i think im going to order the steel, and then i figured if i wasnt happy the gold is only slightly more..

its just crazy how the gold is so little more... normally gold is double or at least 50% more.

in this instance the steel had the single blue hand.. but in other pics i notice the opposite.. basically every metal variation ive seen both ways... so if i were to order today and it was coming directly from JLC (not sitting around anywhere) which would come?

Hi,

Watchmakers generally charge too much for gold over steel. So the difference here is already a lot, specially thinking that the calibre is the same and the calibre cost is supposed to be the main cost of the watch.

Regarding hands colours, the pics shown are from my original review of this watch and this review only show prototypes.

The standard watch only has triple blue seconds hands for the 41.5mm versions. Only the Master Grand Tourbillon 43mm version has a polished steel seconds hand.

Regarding the colour to choose, my choice is for the steel version. It's not just less expensive, it's my favorite style and it makes it so understated!

2 days ago,i was with my AD in his store and to my surprise they have these two varients,SS and RG.

I have detail comparison and made a conclusion go with the RG piece,just if i got some extra in my pocket.As everyone pointed out the SS piece didnt speak to me due to its no contrast of hands with the dial,i would say this is the most vital let down.If its the blue hands instead of silver hands,this piece would sell like hot cakes.

Being a tourni and the design and made up of the whole watch is elegant cum classical appeal,i would say the RG version would tends to stands out compare to the SS version.Furthermore,the second most important issue here is gold price is soaring up but if we compare these pieces,as you pointed out its too marginal,the difference is too minimal.therefore both hands up----RG piece,will be my choice!

just my thoughts.

how did you manage to get the prototype seconds hand? is their a way i could send it into JLC to get that style? the next best thing would be hands finished like my squadra.. or even blued like my grande date.. but i kno that would never happen :-(

...although I must admit that I too prefer the triple polished steel seconds hand.

And I'd love to see a black dial 41.5mm steel version.

... because it's such a different approach to this watch; one would never expect a tourby in steel. I liked the fact that it was casual and that it could be an everyday wearer.

BUT...

I kept staring at it and it kept going flat to me; the lack of contrast and the flatness of the light silver dial against the steel just bored me. When I saw that the RG was not a huge difference in price and since I was spending that much already, I went for the gold and I don't regret it. The play between the colors are beautiful, the contrasts and the open cage make for a very animated dial. So I did it...
