Was quite impressed by...............

I stopped to see my friend who manages one of our city's higher end jewelry stores, they carry several lines of watches such as Rolex PP, JLC and Cartier among others.  I was saying that my next major watch purchase would most likely be something from JLC, like the Ultra Thin I looked at.  He showed me the new watches from Baume & Mercier, the Baumatic line, very impressed by what I saw.  I looked at one time and date version with white dial with 5 day power reserve, looked be be a very nice watch for under $3,000.  May consider one since it won't be one that will be worn 7 days a week for months on end, as I have several I rotate regularly.  I can't deny the JLC is the watch of my dreams right now but the $7,000 price tag on the Ultra Thin I looked at is a bit hard to justify, for me anyway.  I looked at a Patek briefly and having a son in medical school I commented that I could put all my sons through medical school for the price of the PP, I said "that's a lot of doctors sitting in that case".  The B&M obviously does not have the finishing and movement of the JLC but it may just be what I am looking for for a "part time" watch.

It would be nice to see the two watches side by side. [nt]

I want an Ultra Thin, just don't know which version or from whom? There's a few out there to pick from.

Superb JLC ..

In platinum.

A pity, indeed. It is such a class watch! Especially this platinum version. [nt]

They are not playing in the same league. The JLC MUT is something very special you cannot compare to the Baume. [nt]

Yes, they are leagues apart

but for a watch that won't get worn extensively the Baume may not be a bad option, for me anyway. Once my son becomes a doctor I'll tell him I want the JLC for Christmas. smilesmile

He he... Smart way to have it! [nt]

I know what your going through. I deliberated for years before picking up this and haven’t worn it for months!

Every now and again I think about selling it before coming to my senses again.

Very nice. I am sure that if I got one it would get worn frequently for a while until the newness wears off,

and it eventually does. Just not sure I can justify the $7,000+ price tag of the JLC for something that will spend part of it's life in a safe. I can only wear one at a time and I have plenty now but don't want to sell/trade any of them. Just thinking that the B&M is a viable option that may fit my needs (wants) just perfectly. I'll give it some thought over time and arrive at a decision and be happy with it. I have 2 $7,000+ Rolex' plus other watches that occupy a safe part of the time so I guess its no different, but at this point in my life I'm not sure I want to part with $7,000 on another watch when there are more important priorities.

I guess if you buy a JLC preowned and at the right price it’s almost money in the bank...

B&M is very nice but I don’t know if you could say that with new or Preowned - anyway, good luck whatever you do. There isn’t a right answer but the get what you like mantra is IMO best

It's all about personal preferences, but there is a saying...

[paraphrasing]: The most expensive watch is the one we compromise to buy.

Not true in many situations, of course, and we all live within limited resources, but it's certainly a worthy angle to consider.
