Great post Ping and it only illustrates what a sad bunch of fanatics we really are....
Guilty as charged. And I can ruin the perfect sunset, or moment, bu reaching for the watch, the iPhone or camera, and start taking pictures of the wrist rather than the loved one!
We probably all need help: but then that is what we are here for!

for example, why when we see the watch at sunset do we feel compelled to photograph the watch rather than the sunset?

I often stop in the middle of the pathway or garden or beach or mall to take wristshots (instead of selfies i call these wristies) and often get stares from the public lol! But I don't care as I love watches and capturing them on photos when I feel like it
One thing I will advise against - don't take wristies on the car when driving or in a start stop traffic situation. I have a friend who did that and bumped into the car in front as he was .... Shall we say... Multitasking

Just make sure you are not on the side of a cliff or anywhere that your safety is compromised.
One more reason for obsessive watch photography . . .
. . . is for making comparisons with other vintage watches to determine whether they're original or not. Comparing verified examples against a watch 'under observation' allows vintage collectors a chance to weed out doctored specimens.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then studying thousands of pictures will hone one's ability to discern the wheat from the chaff.

... As much as I enjoy taking pictures of my watches and viewing the photographs of other watch apasionados!
Watch photography allows me to have more time playing with and enjoying my watches. I also use photos to share my pieces with other aficionados here at PuristS, or in FB and I have started my own Instagram account just a few days ago.
I also like to take pictures of my watches during my trips abroad, and upon returning home they bring me fond memories of places visited and fantastic friends met.
Thank you for bringing here such a thoughtful insight in an important aspect of enjoying our watches!
