My personal choice would be PP 5960 R with black dial for "casual/italian style" moments in life ... or just to please my wifes wrist (and my eyes) ...
and the old Dato (because of size) in all Pt versions, but not in RG because of the "shiny" case ...
First we have to find beautiful and interesting watches which speak to our heart and then we have to take our own decisions.
The latter is probably the most difficult part ... ;-)

While I like the 5960p...
Because it is the first Patek auto chrono with in-house movement, I, however, find the case of the 5960p too thick to my liking.
I am not a Lange fan yet but I do find the Datograph to be more appealing and "iconically" and "chrono-cally" correct, JMHO.

If value is a concern..........
then go with the 5960p but to me the Datograph up/down is a better looking piece. (and chronograph)

Dato is an Icon
For me the answer is clear: If you want to buy the best of what each brand has to offer, the Dato wins hands down.
I would buy the original and not the version you see here however. Patek is a great brand and I own several but
my suggestion would be if Patek go for the timeless Icons- that is a World time or if a chrono then 5070P. Thats an Icon
and not the model you are looking at.
We have limited budgets in life. Go for the models that are legendary. Dont waste your time with anything else.
Ofcourse if your in love with the 5960 then go for it. Taste is after all individual- let your heart and emotions decide.
5960p thickness is a matter for me,
nevertheless, I consider it more beautiful. Dato seems to have more quality, as it's been discussed here, and it's also very beautiful.

I was wearing my Dato as I was writing you the email. The original ofcourse 
I am for once unclear in which camp I sit.......
My heart shouts Datograph for it's stunningly beautiful movement and it's iconic status within this crazy world of ours. Though not being a fan of Roman Numerals, may lean more towards the newer one.
A small part of my heart and all of my brain says 5960P
I have loved and admired the original piece, more or less since I first saw it.
So, I shall remain sitting on the fence............................I think!

I prefer the 5960, especially the PT version with grey dial. Dato is also a great watch, but it is just cold as a piece of machine and it doesn't wear comfortably on the wrist.
depends on your philosophy of collecting...
my datograph and his cousins ganging up on my hapless 5960.
guess my choice is pretty clear.....and the new data up/down is an even better watch then the original, at least technically!!
the 5960 is a "compromise" watch...a modern chrono with annual calendar, data displayed differently from all out there, and wonderfully sized and proportioned. and i love the round pushers, the diamond at 6 o o'clock being idiosyncratic, and dial manage to be uncluttered despite the wealth of information.
the new dato, i have seen and handled on quite a few occasions, and it is a beautiful and worthy son of the original Dato. other then sentimentality and personal preferences, i challenge anyone to compare the new and old, and tell me the older data is technically, mechanically, and finished better then the new.
