would you trade a yellow gold aquanaut for a new yellow gold submariner with blue dial and bezel?

In general, that would depend on these factors:

*Whether one intends to dive beyond a few meters with it.

*Whether one is routinely in robbery risk locations and situations.

*Whether one would prefer more heft.

*Whether one would prefer more flash.

*Whether one hopes to favorably impress the sort of person impressed by yellow gold Subs (a group that includes not only a certain kind of woman, but also, according to an attorney friend, a certain range of clients).

 

Personally, I'd trade it for a steel Nautilus or a white gold Sub.

That piece looks gorgeous.  But is a major attention getter and can add unnecessary risk in many locations and situations.

I can't speak for the yellow version. But the white gold is a real beauty. I was it in Cabo San Lucas this winter. Wow. Wish they made a steel version.

Rolex sure makes good watches, but IMHO only the stainless steel models are good.

But I recently heard a watch dealer tell a client that Rolexes were for people who didn't know much about watches. If I was offered the same trade I would keep the Patek. Having owned Rolexes (and porsches) in my 20's, when I knew nothing about watches, I applaud the kind of female attention that they bring! However, fortunately my interests in watches developed and I moved onwards and upwards.

Thanks, nautilus.  I own several rolexes and pateks including wg day-date and pp perpetual 5040. Both the aquanuat and yg sub are a little blingy but the rolex is a more durable piece. I am conflicted on the possible trade.

what you want.  I would certainly consider it if you already own other Pateks and the aquanaut you have is a piece just to have.

One thing I can observe on gold rolexes is their second hand value is far below their ss counterpart.  If you want to hold some value, brand new gold rolex and gold/steel rolex are not as good as stainless steel.  Although the brilliant blue dial is attractive but they are not popular at all in Asia for some reason.  So, my take is to stay with PP.

PP is the way to go even for the precious metal.

Neither the Aquanaut or the Rolex are subtle  choices for a shrinking violet and any solid gold watch is going to have similar appeal to the general public.

if you want a sport watch, go with the Rolex, although SS is the way to go on Rolex tool watches in terms of value retention.
