I think the metal bracelet is as much a part of what makes the design a success as anything else. Also I really don't like the shiny lugs that go between the leather strap and the case - to my eye they really detract from the attractiveness of the watch. Just my opinion!
5980/1a or 5980r
I was thinking of buying a 5980/1a but I just saw a 5980r and now I'm in a bit of a quandary....which do you buy? The 5980 is the classic nautilus, can be worn anywhere and has the chrono. The 5980r is a very striking watch but it can't go everywhere. The 1a Dan be worn EVERYEHERE. The r has all the presence of gold but in a much softer hue. Was wondering what your thoughts here were? Thx much

But you need to determine what metal would fit your lifestyle so you can wear this often and not think about it. The 5980R is indeed gorgeous. But it's flashy. You will be happy with either though
