Patek Philippe

Your views between these two pieces would be gratefully appreciated.

I have been looking at getting a "sports" Patek which can be worn as an everyday watch and these are my choices.

I do not dive or swim very often, but would like a piece that is waterproof to a greater degree then 30m's. Because to my "simple" way of thinking, if it is tested to a greater water pressure, then it must be a more robust watch!?

Having only recently becomeinterested in these pieces, I am currently learning as much about them as possible.

I have not been able to find a post which puts these two directly in a head to head. Is that because they are two very different pieces?

Your opinions on these two and which one you would go for would be appreciated.

both watches are very interesting, and you cannot go wrong with either....

Nautilus is a classic and the fact that you cannot find it in a store window is
an indication.....

The aquanaut must be one of the most comfortable watches to wear....
The rubber strap is extremely comfortable... However I was told by an owner that
the buckle tends to open in the water... (any other owners have similar experiences?)

Both great sport watches, elegant and understated....
I had a similar dilemma and I ended up ordering a Nautilus....

Not an easy decision to make but this is part of the fun....

Have had the 5167a for over 2 years and have worn it more than any other watch I have during that time.
As you said its the most comfortable watch I have ever worn.
 The clasp is easy to adjust yourself without any tools, so coming open should not be a concern.
its also more casual/sporty than the Nautilus.
I thought I might sell it after I got my 5711a, but after wearing it on some 90* + days I renewed my appreciation for it.

The 5711 is a GREAT watch also and if I would have gotten it 1st may not have gotten the 5167.
I actually prefer the 5711 to the 5712 I have.

I also prefer 5711 to 5712.....

The chrono version though is growing to me...

If doing the same thing over and over again is a sign of madness, then I think I have a small dose of it. I already had a 5712G and then saw a 5167, tried it on and was sold. It's an incredibly comfortable watch to wear. Now I'm thinking of adding another Naughty. I could go for a 5980, but have wanted a Datograph for a very long time, so not likely to happen. Then all of a sudden I see more pics of the 5711/1a and I'm now drawn to that. Is having a 5711/1a, a 5712G and a 5167 too much of a good thing?

I don't know as I have a similar setup, debating whether the 5711r or 5712 stays

I was torn between 3 watches....the AP 15300 (cousin to the 5711 by the original designer), the 5711 1a and the 5167 1a. 

My decission was based on availability, or rather, the lack of availability.

No secret that the 5711 will get more votes from the "people".  But, when you want all....what do you do?

In the last month 5711's started showing up the the dealers.  Within 2 weeks there were vertually gone.  I believe I got the last one available during this distribution run in the SE Asian region.  I jumped on it because it might have been a year before I'd get another chance (for a new watch on this side of the world).  I knew at this time the 5167's are in the windows of the AD's and moving at a 'normal' pace...the 5711 doesn't even make it to the window. The AP 15300, also, is not difficult to get these days.

I would have to admit, that if all three watches were easy to find, I would still be torn as to which direction to go. 

If I was you and could get a 5711....go that route and get the other later...the 5167 should be available for a few years (I say that with no real substance of knowledge, as PP tends to do some funny thing with some models).

OH.....but it is fun making these type of decisions.....now back to work, making the less fun decisions of everyday.

 

i would go for the PP5167 with rubber strap. I think it is much more interesting than 5711 or 5167 with bracelet.

Does patek sell the bracelet as a seperate item, so you can have the best of both worlds?

Not by experience...but by reading, you can get either the extra rubber strap or bracelet.  There was a thread somewhere on line that said that buying the bracelet and ording the rubber strap was easier.  Since the rubber strap must be cut to fit, if or when you go to sell it, the new buyer may have to buy a new strap and for that reason I think PP makes it easy to get additional rubber straps.

And they told me, that you can get a S/S strap for the 5167, but it was a good job that I was sitting down when they told me the price!!!

If you are thinking of buying the rubber strap separately, then you also need to get the deployment clasp. Please make sure you are sitting down too,   Cheers !  

I just purchased a 1998 Aquanaut that the previous owner had fitted with a Patek stainless steel bracelet. I'm glad he did, not only because it's beautiful, but because the original tropical "rubber" strap (which he gave me in a small plastic bag) had hardened and become brittle over the years, and was broken into a few pieces. I think the stainless bracelet will be much more durable. The steel bracelet's expensive, but in my opinion, well worth it.

most versatile sports watch. slim enuf to fit under cuffs, and sporty enuf to be worn with a short sleeve shirt fr the weekends.

1. Sports style
2. Everyday watch
3. Don't swim often
4.Waterproof beyond 30m

You won't go wrong with either and ultimately your choice might come down to what feels better on the wrist, which dial you prefer most or your mood on the day that you buy one.

Both would act well as everyday watches and are quite discrete. I wear my 5711 at work and casually with short sleeves and I have never had anyone glare at my wrist or comment on my watch. The 5711 is slim and lightweight and I don't have to think about changing straps ever. I swim occasionally with it on, but never enough that I start to think that a watch on a rubber strap would be more appropriate.

Perhaps it might be harder to get a 5711 over a 5167 and that might be another factor.

As I said earlier, you won't go wrong with either but considering the way that I wear mine, the 5711 is a better choice.

... at the end of the day it is a mechanical watch: let it drop on hard ground and all the claim of being robust can be at stake !

But they are both more water proof, so that is a true point.

Which model: the 5711 should feel lighter on the wrist.

So, if you prefer a bit of weight, than the 5167.

Or the 5711 in WG ... ?

I tried 5711G, 5711/1a, 5167/1a and 5167 on...
Although I am aware that 5711/1a is probably more collectible and versatile (easily dress down and dress up,)  5167 (plastic strap) still got my vote.
As a sport watch: one can hardly find a causal watch that wear so comfortably, with strong presence, yet understated...esp in a world of huge sport watches!
However, I can't picture someone wear 5711/1a to swim or in action, i mean it looks good with jeans and even on the deck of a yacht, but not on a beach or with a racket.
As dress watch in smart casual: I'm in my mid 30's and tend to fashionably dress down then to dress up, and IMO 5167 goes well with suit if you are no older than Warren Buffet haha. If you wear french cuff, you need Calatrava case anyway. Just my 2 cent.
But let's not forget one risk...5167 is not going kill your 5711 bug

Was at a Patek dinner I attended a little while ago. He wore a dark suit, shirt with french cuffs and a discrete silk tie. He also wore a 5167 with it.

Though T. Stern could just wear any Patek in any ocassion, his dressing up with 5167 in a semi public event means something to 5167 owners! Did he go with rubber strap or bracelet?
Anyway, we still need a reason for a classic Patek don't we...?

In truth I think it's a composite strap, not just rubber. But it looked very sharp. Nice to see someone happy to break to the conventions of what you;re "expected" to wear in situations like this.

My decision is nearly made!!
