Paris 2022 Rare Handcrafts exhibition

 By: chris7509 : May 14th, 2022-10:46
Yesterday evening, i had the pleasure to visite the Paris 2022 Rare Handracft exhibition .. and wow !

This is the first time i have the chance to see rare handcrafts "live" (beyond my 5231) and i have to say that even if some of the themes do not speak to me at all like planes or different topics, the work involved in all of them is simply phenomenal  ! (coming from someone who cannot draw 2 straights lines ... )

Below some pictures i could take, bear with the very thick display glasses in front of the watches and the very bright spot lights on top of them.
I m pretty sure that with natural light they would look even better .
Dome clock and pocket watches are all unique pieces, while the wrist watches are made in batches of 6 or 10 ...

Cuba - Enamel

Engraving ( several years of work according to the guide .. and poor pictures ...) - Theme was Paris univeral exhibition ..

Eiffel tower

Miss Liberty before she left us smile

Insane wood marquetery ( unique pieces about 500/600 tiny pieces of wood ...)

Back to enamel with some animals :

and last but not least some of my favorites, enamel in green tones

Conclusion, if you are in Paris and have the opportunity go and see them, it is really 1 hour in another galaxy.
Cheers !

The engraving ones are fantastic ! The details are excellent !

Although some of the themes might not resonate, the artistic work is undeniable.

Which enamel piece sang to you ?

Cameleon #1

In the wrist watches ( the one with some red / pink parts) is the one i like the most. I hope some fellow collectors will be able to take better ones in natural light conditions
Then looking at unreachable ones, wood marquetery and engraved pocket watches are breath taking + some of the dome clocks, even though given their pricetag they are worth building the office around them and not the other way round smile

It is amazing how they can put small pieces of wood together to create such dials!

+1, not that I mind the other Rare Handcrafts (!), but wood marquetry is arguably one of the most challenging and fascinating, given its incredible complexity and the ability required to produce each dial by means of tiny wood slivers! ;-)

In fact, note that only ONE person on this planet (J.B) is authorized to produce these dials for Patek! ;-) Also, production is so limited that, while we have some pocket watches (as shown in Chris's pictures), this year NO wood marquetry wristwatches are offered smile

Thanks for the additional info FabR.

Didn’t know that only one person is making them for Patek. Hope they are training more people so the art would not be lost.

My pleasure — and they definitely are!😉 While only artists at the highest levels can of course work for Patek Philippe, I agree it would be extremely unfortunate should this craft ever get forgotten!👍 Cheers.

Many thanks Chris for a great photoreport on the 2022 Rare Handcraft collection! The artists who produce these masterpieces for Patek are THE top on this planet at their crafts, and viewing these artworks in person is such a fantastic opportunity! ;-)

Let me just remind our members that the Paris Rare Handcraft Exhibition is taking place through May 23 of this year, in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Below is the link to Patek's official site with the registration details (note that admission is free).

As a minor point, my understanding from Patek is that all wristwatches this year are a limited edition of 6 (not 10 as it sometimes happened in past years). Also, since the Rare Handcraft collection is not available on Patek's site yet, our members can find our original thread of March 30 below with all information, including the press release with a detailed description of each model.
(Thanks as usual to Patek for sending me the material back in March, to be made available to all WatchProSite members! smile)

Many thanks again Chris for this terrific and detailed photoreport!

PS: I’m re-enclosing below for all our members the RH press release of March 30 with the full details, since it doesn’t seem to be available online or with the ADs yet, and it may help if you would like to submit an application with Patek👍 Enjoy!

The chameleons are my favourites.

Definitely an excellent choice --- interestingly, the two 'chameleons' are the only 5177G this year (-026 and -027), one of my favorite references for its hobnail bezel, which was introduced in the RH catalog only four years ago! ;-) Cheers.

What a cool photo documentary of these pieces!

the Cuba 1 pic I like. I would think a RG case Cuba with brown tones and rolling cigars or tobacco leaves would be cool.

Traditionally, the (out-of-catalog) RH models have, in modern times, mainly been in white precious metals (G gold or P), save the ‘Ladies versions’ with a diamond bezel…but it would be interesting to see some R offering as well in the future!👍🥂Cheers.
