I tried to look among the materials I have from Patek, but can’t seem to find further details on this dial…Let me look again as soon as I have a laptop within reach and I’ll definitely share if I have more👍 Enjoy!
I have NO idea what process they use or how they make it but I can say it is really stunning and photos do not do it justice. See below the nuances of how it changes colors...
It is beyond difficult to catch the nuances of the dial but the photo below shows a bit even if the quality is not so great 🙉🙊🙈

I totally agree, absolutely mesmerized by the whole thing, I catch myself staring at it for minutes at a time
it is an excellent dial...from manufacturing standpoint the process of sunburst isn't complicated much.
super simplified steps of manufacturing...
1) For a standard dial, the base dial (mostly brass or silver) is polished multiple times, so the surface has absolute evenness (almost mirror polish).
2) then it is multiple layer of varnish & lacquer.
3) Numerals/Index markings are by pad printing or with a traditional rivet approach for applied index (so dials will have holes to hold the applied indexes or Diamonds in place).
So the sunburst effect is normally created by the first step, by following specific pattern during polishing & then the lacquer amplifies the sunburst effect.
The challenge of it is more, the thinness of the dial makes it extremely difficult to polish, machine and maintain that the dial is even (without dent or ding).
I attach a video of Parmigiani dial manufacture Credits: Watch TV...it will give you an idea. Patek would have it probably 1000X quality controlled given where the brand.

Whatever process was used to create this dial may never be known, but the beauty it presents is undeniable!
I just put my 5170p on Tuesday, and was planning to post a few pics. But your shot says it all.
How can such a beauty not be appreciated as much as it deserves? The dial, case size, movement, metal, and historical importance.
Time will tell, but I feel more appreciation is yet to come.

Very underrated piece, I have been fortunate to acquire and view some amazing pieces, some of the most beautiful in the watch world, nothing comes close except the new CODE tourbillon( mock me if you will, but just wait!)
This is really a stunning object, I am bewildered by it. The movement, dial, case finishing, but what makes it truly unique is not just that everything is perfect, but the whole is more than the sum of its parts, just the overall impact is perfection and absolute beauty.

I don’t know much about dial manufacturing but I know what I like.
and the dial on the 5170P is to die for. The 5170P was on my radar for a long time and I was fortunate to finally get a new one. Underrated is an understatement and it is fairly rare, this is one that will be very sought after as time goes on and the price will go up accordingly. The diamond markers are so beautifully understated it’s like magic, the size is perfect, it is very comfortable and can be worn in all situations minus water activities. Maybe my favorite Patek but I’m keeping my eyes open for one I can get that beats it, that is a tall order…Jim
