The gearbox was one of the flaws, at that time.

And it was a 5, to a 6 gears...

Still, I didn't forget it. I did a search on the net, wow, the prices are still high!

All the best, my friend.

Was this a cousin to the Scirocco? . . .

. . . we had the VW here Stateside, but not the A2.  We didn't even get the A3 here until the current generation.  I remember seeing just two of the very handsome earlier models (and both with German plates), including one parked on my street.

On my trip to Montreal, back in '01, though, A3's were to be seen everywhere.  Apparently, Audi NA wasn't able to bring them into the US, but Canada - no problem.  Go figure.

The Scirocco II came in the early 1980...

I had the first generation from 1978. GT, 90 HP. But it ran pretty fast and was super exciting to drive.

I got it from my mother in 1983, it had 120 000 Kilometers, and I drove it for 5 years. Had to let it go, not because of the engine ( 290 000 Kiometers without issues! ) but because of the rust on the floor... I saw the road through it!

Must be a typical VW problem

Must be a typical VW problem.
My first car, a 1961 Beatle which I bought in 1973,  I had to let go because I was getting wet feet while driving in the rain.
The seeing the road go by didn't bother me though.
Don

It is not VW's priviledge... It seems that italian cars had the same issue. [nt]

Rust on VW's ...

 By: bimbeano : August 9th, 2014-11:54
Don, i had a 1987 Jetta which i kept for 11 years and drove 290,000 hard kilometers ... the engine went dead because of the severe abuse. There was some rust but just a tiny bit; i even remember i once cut out a part of the inside of my wheel arches at the rear and i didn't really treated them well against rust .. so a few years later i checked them for rust but all i found was some surface-rust at the spots were i had used the cutting disc smile  ...
IMO VW's were FAR ahead of the French , Italian and even BMW or Mercedes those days .... when it came to rust-resistance that is !
On my current 2008 VW Transporter i have a blank spot of metal since 2010 ... and all i see are some tiny rusty spots, nothing to really worry about .. maybe time to do a little treatment ... .

FYI .. my grandfather bought his first Mercedes in the 60ies ...
I think it was a 190 ... built in Brussels ... they had to let it go after two years ... because the chassis was completely rusted out smile ...

The treatment of the steel, and the steel , were not the same in 1987, than in the 70ies,

IMO...

Yep, a huge leap taken in the 80ies ...

.. but only VW and a few others took that leap ... The French and Italian waited until the 90ies i guess smile ...
