... which is the perfect companion for cooking and BBQ: combining the bidirectionally rotating bezel and the flyback central minute counter, it is the perfect watch to time my various dishes.
.... since the Type XXI suffers from the common luxury syndrome of many fine timepieces: It is considered cheap to simply lacquer the hands with white paint, so what you get are perfectly polished steel hands, sometimes even plated with a hi-gloss rhodium finish. The result is that these hands, the stop second, the hour counter and the sweep second, become unvisible in nearly all lighting conditions. .... and since the end parts of their straps perfectly match the case's outlines, the beautiful flutes between the lugs are completely hidden. I like them visible, so an aftermarket strap with straight end is the solution. The second strap is offered by Kaufmann, the first one is a bit special: It is made by a very old American leather manufacturer, Horween. This particular style of padding and stitching, however, was introduced by a very innovative small U.S.-based watch company named Xeric. They specialize in unorthodox designs, and for a "NASA timepiece" they offered straps replicating the unique padding or the space suits.
