Your comments mirrored my thoughts last week as I watched . . .

. . . Trio and Encore, British films from the early '50s revolving around short stories by W S Maugham (and, interestingly enough, introduced by Maugham himself at the beginning).
The tales were realistic, based on Maugham's own experiences. And because they were real, utterly charming. I was taken by each account, especially the middle episode of Encore. Can't find a clip on Youtube, but Trio is available in full:
(Yes, I've seen Quartet a few times, but Trio only once, and Encore only in snippets.)
As I was watching, I was thinking, "Movies today are about aliens, super heroes, and action figures. Why can't Hollywood make films like Encore anymore?"
Your last comment hit the nail on the head: sometimes quiet is good, but it does encourage you to overlook it and then you're missing something rather special.
'My' words precisely ;-) . . .
