Putting my money where my mouth is - aka the Railmaster as my first Omega

May 26, 2018,01:35 AM

The title has a twofold meaning in this case. First of all I entered into a gentleman’s agreement with Nilo that he’d get a Montblanc watch if I was to get an Omega. I have to admit he’s been much faster at following through on it than I have but finally I am getting there smile After the Moonwatch I got for my dad last year now there’s one for me as well. No worries Nilo, not the last one.

Secondly, the watch. I have - amongst other Purists - been complaining how watch brands rely too much on history and how innovation in both mechanics and design is muted at best. At the same time there’s a certain fatigue with the Limited Edition watches.

Saying this (repeatedly) I felt it wrong to not go for a regular production watch without direct historical inspiration, with a METAS certified co-axial movement, without a date, at a size of under 40mm that I happened to like the looks of.

I know the resale value will be relatively poor but feel it’s a worthwhile trade off in my case. And if I don’t put my money where my mouth is, I have no one but myself to blame if the brands follow directions I do not fully support smile

A full report on the Railmaster to follow and thanks to all of you who have chimed in with advice which Omega to go for!

Have a great weekend!

I have to say I liked this version best. The leather NATO version had the watch sit too high on my wrist. Thanks!

Congrats!

I felt it right and as I do not intend to sell the watch anyway, I think the trade-off is more than worth it

Great choice my friend .

It’s a different watch from the other Omega sports model but you can’t deny that there’s something going on in it that makes this watch a worthy piece in one’s collection. Congrats and wear the RM in good health always!

Thanks a lot, Greenwatch!

You are right, definitely different

Rails . . .

. . . and rock stars. Yup, that's Lemmy's statue, situated a few feet from his regular bar stool at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Lemmy probably preferred German watches, but he wouldn't turn down a Rail, . . . . . . would he? ;-) ...

Lemmy was, to say the least, a colorful character. I remember seeing him in the mid-'80s . . .

. . . at the Rainbow wearing an SS officer's uniform. And it wasn't just a pose . . . the outfit was authentic. At some point in the late '80s, he stopped dressing in Nazi regalia at the request of the Rainbow's management due to complaints. So he switche...

Thanks for all this detail, Art :)

People not wearing watches before the advent of mobile phones? Scandalous

Thanks a lot, Blomman!
