Omega vs Rolex
Dec 30, 2020,05:35 AM
It’s such a complex issue, by era or by price history.
In the 90’s to early 2000’s they used many ETA movements, so the comparison is likely more similar to a Tudor today. But in terms of finishing, I think their cases are better finished than the rough edges of many Tudor pieces today.
Then the co-axial movements came, and they upped their game. But the price was still slightly lower than Rolex.
And then they created the master co-axial movement, which is jawdroppingly impressive for it’s antimagnetism and service intervals.
All this while, Rolex kept to a snail pace, and started played the game of scarcity vs demand starting from 8-10 years ago. They got this “right”, and demand for their pieces went crazy.
Maybe Omega should shrink their catalogue, because the choices are bewildering and confuses me sometimes. At odd times of the week, you’d find me looking at their catalogue with an internal dialogue “should i buy the Seamaster and which colour should I buy?” This thought process terminates in “No, I can wait till later to buy it because they are common”.
I think Omega got tech and innovation right; however, they got their customers too spoilt for choice that they won’t feel the pressure to buy their pieces immediately.
It is odd because my Dad was an Omega fan. I ended up becoming more of a Rolex fan, and maybe the rarer stuff like the independents get me excited too.
Will I buy an Omega? Yes, but maybe later..because Scarcity is a a keystone to my decision to spend - I want something people struggle to get.
