Book: Apollo Remastered

Dec 27, 2022,09:47 AM

I received a few books for Christmas and I thought this one would be worth mentioning in the Omega forum, for obvious reasons. The British author, Andy Saunders, was given access to NASA’s store of film of images captured during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. Normally the film is kept frozen at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston but it was defrosted and cleaned and Mr Saunders set to work remastering the images.

This article on the BBC news website explains more about the process and shows some incredible “before” and “after” shots:

The results of the remastering are amazingly clear images. Some of the images are already very famous, others less so, but I found all of them fascinating. The book contains over 400 images. Here is a small selection:

Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission, wearing a Speedmaster (I wonder if that watch will ever become popular 😀)

Aldrin again during the Apollo 11 mission and now featuring on the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 Speedmaster:

Ed White during the earlier Gemini 4 mission:

The BBC article shows the underexposed “before” image of the following photo, which was also used on the book’s cover. The remastering of the image to get the photo below is just amazing. James McDivitt on the Apollo 9 mission:

The classic “blue marble” shot taken during the Apollo 17 mission:

All the best,

Jon
