Looking a little bit closer (loupe), I found a tiny inscribed number on the case back. I read it as “100429B”. Anyone care to guess what it could mean? Best ...  

Might it refer to the case maker / watch assembler? Look forward to others replies. G.

There was no other way for a watchmaker to keep track of repairs. This was not something Omega would do. A simple explanation. Best Bill

My question really stems from curiosity about the past life of watches. Would such inscriptions generally be an identifier of the actual person working on the watch, or does it mean something else completely?

You have to get the movement serial number and get an ectract from the omega archives. If the watch was sold in your country you can maybe hunt down some known watchmakers and see if they have any stories to share. But as noted these watches have no ident... 

I'm sure there are more inscriptions on the interior of the case once the movement is removed

. . . where the owner was a diving outfit, with several watches on loan at any one time. Kinda like inscriptions on British military watches. Art
