Advise needed for Omega 33.3 Chrono

Jul 22, 2019,10:21 AM

Dear Omega collectors and experts... As I was looking for a Vacheron Vintage Chronograph,  I chanced upon a Omega ref 2077 with 33.3 movement. Vintage Vacheron are plagued with restored dials and authentic issues,

My question is does the ref 2077 also have these issues? I have posted some pictures here. Can anyone see anything that raise a red flag?

Between a Vacheron 4072 and the Omega ref 2077, which is more desirable and why? The price of the Omega seems higher than a VC 4072. Any educated info are greatly appreciated smile

Thanks.

Super hard to tell, as there were many Omega 33.3. Be careful with " marriage " watches, I mean the dial and the case from different references. I am not saying that this is the case here.

The difference between a Vacheron 4072 and these Omega 33.3? The size, some 33.3 being bigger than the Vacheron ( circa 38 mm ), and the Vacheron would be let's say more... Exquisite, refined? Still, some 33.3 are highly appealing. Here is one I am harass...

Thank you...

how important is 33.3 movement compared to the Vacheron's? Also, any tell sign or concern about legitimate dial? How's the one I post? Lastly, can you share with me here or on pm the pricing of such piece? Thank yo very much

Ahhhh I see...

I keep hearing 33.3 but never link them together.

That to me....

is uber important. I want something that has an interesting story to share.

Do you have an inner caseback pic, CL? . . .

. . . there might be valuable info to be mined there. Art

Hi Art...

This is the inner case image. ...

Thanks, CL. 2077-3 would indicate earlier rather than later production . . .

 By: Dr No : July 22nd, 2019-11:57
. . . as the earliest production of this reference dates to the late '30s. Shock protection first appeared in the late '40s, to the best of my knowledge. So, unless there was a gap in production batches, I'd expect a /3 to not have shock protection. I'll ...

Just located an identical example of a 2077/3 . . .

. . . with a shock protected movement dating to 1950, so the one you're looking at is probably a-ok. I'll do a bit more research later this afternoon, but for now, rest easy. Art

You're good to go, CL. Of course, there's no guarantee . . .

 By: Dr No : July 22nd, 2019-17:13
. . . that movement was issued in the case unless Omega confirms it. But it all hangs together as far as I can tell. Price will be well into the five-figure range in either dollars, Euros, or pounds sterling. Good luck! And kindly share more pics with us ...

Wow Art...WOW WOW....

Thank you so much for doing such detail research. I was out for a few hours and I feel bad for not able to reply earlier on. You are such kind soul. Thank you very much !!! I learn so much from what you just mention...very very exciting !!! Cheers, John

Always glad to help, CL. I'm not really up on vintage Omega chronographs, but . . .

 By: Dr No : July 22nd, 2019-18:22
. . . remember when 33.3 references went for a tenth of what sellers are asking for now. Should've bought one then ;-) . . .

True true!!!

May I ask what vintage chronograph do you like? between 13ZN and 33.3 movement, which would you prefer?

When it comes to chronograph movements . . .

. . . I've got to hand it to Longines.

Dear Nicolas and Art... How about this Longines?

 By: CL : July 23rd, 2019-07:12
I am thinking of either this Rose Gold Longines or the Omega I posted above. This Longines is 10k more expensive than the Omega and is 4k more than the price of a restored Vacheron 4178 Les Collectionuure series. Is it way too expensive? Sorry for not sta...

This is kinda like a Jimmy Page . . .

. . . vs Keith Richards decision, CL. Yeah, Jimmy was the greatest player ever in terms of pure talent, but Keith lives to play. And has kept it up with his original band for decades longer. At even money, I'd be swayed by the Omega because it is more wea...

For a $10K difference in price, CL could get the Omega chronograph . . .

. . . and have enough left over for an Omega chronometer.

True, true . . .

. . . but then he'd be losing out on the essence of a 13ZN. If there's a proposition nearly every vintage aficionado agrees on, it's the ineffable beauty of the 13ZN. I'll concede the superiority of Longines vis à vis Omega when it comes to movement appre...

Both of you sure make 33.3 , 13ZN and 30CH very desirable :-)

I will give myself a few days to make a decision. Right now I'm happy to know about these movements and can go further educate myself

Here is mine.

...

Practically every time I see a Longines 13ZN or 30CH, I feel . . .

 By: Dr No : July 23rd, 2019-14:42
. . . as though I'm looking at a watch first, and a chrono second. That's almost never the case with other brands. Even Omega. ;-(

It is one of these images you had posted...

I like Omega Chronometer too.

I think you mean...

 By: CL : July 23rd, 2019-13:37
you would be swayed by Longines at even money but at a substantial discount, it will be Omega hands down. Thanks

You got it! . . .

. . . nothing beats ten g's of play money to go watch hunting. Especially when you're hunting . . . . . . an Omega chronometer ;-) . . . ...

Let me know if you need . . .

At your service, Don Nico! . . .
