Just my opinion and experience…

And I’m sure others will have good reasons to disagree. I chose the Hesalite version, actually 3 times. One vintage 145.022, the prior version and the new one. I also have had several other plexi crystal watches for many years with no problems that a little Polywatch wouldn’t clear up. I have had, however one occasion where a sapphire crystal shattered and pretty much destroyed the dial on a watch. My fault totally but there is a reason that diving watches over the years have done well with plexi crystals until sapphire came along. They’re tough and easily replaced, if worse comes to worse. At this point in time, I think the difference for me comes down to looks and in the case of the Speedmaster the sapphire just didn’t look right around the edges. Someone described it as looking like the watch had a cataract and that's kind of what it looks like to me. Milky white reflection around the rehaut. As far as the case back goes, well, the movement just isn’t that beautiful, especially compared to any ALS. Nice enough for a machine finished movement but once you’ve seen it…

Anyway, no wrong choices here, it’s a wonderful watch and a nice upgrade over the prior version regardless of which version you choose.

Hesalite vs sapphire redux

So I paid a visit to the local Omega boutique yesterday and checked out the new Speedmaster — both versions. Loved them both, loved the front of the hesalite slightly more. A few thoughts: 1. If I go hesalite, will I regret losing the view of the movement...

#3 is reason enough to go haselite.

Hesalite is easy to polish with polywatch. But it doesn’t look bad with a few battle scars either. Knowing they can easily be polished out any time makes them less of a big deal. Its a very liberating feeling. Also, received my 3570.50 back from Omega ser...

For the bracelet (all brushed), solid case back ( which I prefer for these types of watches) and of course the authentic nature and look of hesalite. ...

All great advice, guys.

I’m surprised no one’s sticking up for the sapphire. I called my AD today and told him I was inclined towards the hesalite. He said, “excellent choice, sir, that’s the right choice.” I said, great, so do you have one in stock I can try on?” He said, “sorr...

My sense is sapphire tips the scales towards . . .

. . . novelty in a watch carefully crafted to represent a balance between new and old. Hesalite, conversely, tips the balance back towards vintage. So it all basically comes down to whether you see the third generation Speedy as a nod towards an updated p...

Mixing hesalite with a coaxial escapement does seem anachronistic, but I learned long ago not to be too logical about these things. I like the look of the hesalite model better; I just wish they made a scratch-resistant form of the same crystal, with the ...

Anachronistic or . . .

. . . parachronistic - Omega's got all the bases covered!

I just bought the sapphire. It’s in transit.

I have plenty of sapphire watches that have never shattered and destroyed anything. That’s a lie. One of my watches did that, but that was because I was in a motorcycle accident and smashed into an SUV. The acrylic probably would not have survived that ei...
