SIHH 2019: Panerai PAM 1039 Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible.

Jan 22, 2019,03:29 AM

The Panerai PAM 1039 Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible is a new watch, with a 47 mm Carbotech case ( carbon fiber ) with a titanium case back.

The dial is made of... Sailcloth, the sailcloth used on the " Luna Rossa " yacht, which is as original as it is eye catching.

The bezel is in Carbotech as well, unidirectional.

The big red hand is showing the second time zone, which is not very practical since you don't have any 24 hours graduation to help you to know if it is 4 AM or 4 PM on the picture.

The small red second hand is there to remind you the official color of the italian Yacht.

The watch is water resistant to 300 meters, which is good enough for a diver watch.

The movement is the Cal 910 GMT, automatic, offering a mower reserve of 72 hours.

I had the opportunity to see it live at the Panerai Booth, it is a really eye catching watch, chromatically speaking, and original with its sailcloth dial.

Now, I didn't see all the collection and I really hope that they have something for the old school guys among us.

Best,

Nicolas

I like everything about this watch except the short novel of words on the bottom of the dial.

A real pity and regrettable design decision.

You have a point... [nt]

I don't like very much about this watch

Including the wall of text at the bottom of the dial. Unfortunately this seems to be commonplace these days. Doesn't seem to be hurting Rolex ...

I like the version of this with blue markers and hands.

47mm is a little much, but maybe a 42mm with those colors will come along.

A close up of the dial...

The sails of Luna Rossa are made of....

fibra di carbonio (carbon fibre) kevlar, nylon, cuben fibre

As far as I know, it might....

very well be that they have been used for the first time on a watch. Panerai is an official sponsor of Luna Rossa and I suppose they're pulling all the stops

Thanks Sergio for the details

When I originally read that the dial was made up of the sail of the boat; I imagined that the sail was fabric... so I thought the dial would deteriorate after time. Now I imagine the dial to be more robust Darron

I agree that 44 mm would be ideal for this reference.

I believe that their pricing of these references ia a little over the top. I own two of their carbotech models. I still prefer steel or titanium

It never stopped them before.....

if you think of the Bronzos. One thing is obvious though, the proliferation of the Submersible models is "in our face".

I remember an old SNL skit about Michael Bolton...

It said something along the lines of "Nobody remakes his own songs better than Michael Bolton!!!" In watchmaking, this quality certainly applies to Panerai.

I honestly think that....

the "remake" scenario, goes hand in hand with the watchmaking industry. If you think about it, there are so many Reversos out there or RO that, if you were to sit down and decide to chose one, it would take you a week to make your mind up LOLLL
