Sandwich or sausage

 Sandwich Dial

Construction:

  • Two separate dial plates:
    • Bottom plate: Coated with lume (e.g., Super-LumiNova or tritium in vintage models).
    • Top plate: Has numerals and indices cut out to reveal the lume underneath.
  • Creates a cut-out, recessed look to the numerals.

Visual Effect:

  • Indices/numerals appear sunken or hollowed out.
  • Lume sits beneath the surface.

Pros:

  • Looks more technical and modern.
  • Strong heritage — used on vintage Panerai watches from the 1930s/40s (e.g., Radiomir 3646).
  • Often glows more evenly due to the flat lume layer underneath.

 Sausage Dial

Construction:

  • Single dial plate with the numerals painted or printed on top in raised lume.
  • The lume is often applied in a thick, rounded way — hence the “sausage” nickname.

Visual Effect:

  • Indices/numerals appear raised and slightly bulged, like they’re sitting on the surface.

Pros:

  • Has a classic, hand-applied look.
  • Feels more traditional or vintage in style.
  • The lume can have more texture and a tactile feel.
