Ocean swim with Panerai

Dec 02, 2017,18:55 PM

Team,

Today I competed in the Bondi to Bronte ocean swimming race in Sydney. However, due to weather conditions at Bronte Beach the course was changed to a 2km Bondi Beach only swim.

How does this relate to watches? I wore my PAM449! I knew the swim was going to be hard, water temp was 16C and I have not done any ocean swimming before, so I anticipated that this would be a difficult event. I decided that I would use the legend of the Marine Miltare divers to inspire me when it got tough. A quick lap of Bondi Beach is nothing compared to attaching mines to British warships in Alexandria harbour isn’t it?

Here I am before the event, Panerai on wrist:

And here is the after shot, I didn’t stop shivering for 20-30 minutes, I was freezing! Also a bit confused. When I got out I think the race officials looked a bit concerned... my girlfriend counted 8 ambulances called to the race finish!

Now time to refuel!

As you can see, the 449 and it’s limited Di Stefano strap did very well. No issues! The strap was subject to a salt water wash process that makes it waterproof.

My race time was 43 minutes, not bad for first go. We’ll see if I can get a better time next year!

Enjoy your weekend team.

I like that watch quite a bit. Thanks for the pics as well. Cheers, Filip

It’s a great Panerai

Also, that panerai is almost the same size as your trunks! 😋

Well done Harry....

Pretty good!

43 minutes is not a bad time at all! I had a close friend who is a multi-Ironman triathlete who does 2km swims as well. That's pretty amazing you did it with the watch on!

The watch was made for it

And if my gear doesn’t do what it says on the tin then it gets the flick! Thanks for the kind words!

I love it when a Panerai....

goes back to its original element: water. Congratulations for both the 449 and the performance...

Thank you my friend [nt]

No message body ...

Mate, I was so cold!

 By: Harry2 : December 2nd, 2017-23:43
Even in that warm sun, I was shivering like crazy and I was dizzy and disoriented when I got out. I recovered almost fully in about 30 minutes though.

Bravo...

That's what I LOVE to see: watch living different moments!

They need it mate!

We should push ourselves, and our sports watches. And if they don’t live up to the manufacturer’s specifications then they should be named and shamed. I’m happy to say my Panerai is an excellent performer!

Congratulations Cobber

No better feeling when you've competed and pushed yourself to the limit 👍 Nice to see the pam getting put through its paces in the ocean

Thank you my friend

Panerai with leather strap in salt water is the way it was meant to be. The watch gods will it to be so!

Haha that was the point :)

Honestly there was a stage where I thought “maybe I’ll give it a miss” but then how would I make a post like this? No, I had to do it. Thanks mate!

Going for the Australian triathlon? ;)

Boxing, ocean swimming and...? Really impressed at what you get up to - kudos! And doing it with a PAM - double cool!

I’m open for suggestions for next event!

I switched to swimming because of back pain. I’m thinking about pursuing yoga!

Great achievement !!

saltwater crocodiles and no white sharks in sight?

Not that I could see!

 By: Harry2 : December 3rd, 2017-11:52
It was just all emerald green beneath me. My biggest fear was the depths of the ocean, but I found it didn’t end up being a problem at all! 🤔

Congrats Harry. Looks like fun (that crazy "I'll never do it again but 10 minutes later you're signing up for the next one" kinda fun).

Did everyone swim without a wetsuit? Personally I'm not comfortable enough without a wetsuit in these types of event.

I would say predominately wetsuits

 By: Harry2 : December 3rd, 2017-11:44
I don’t even own one! I think you really need to swim in cold water regularly to do so safely.

I do it a couple of times a year, but usually temps are at least high 50s/low 60s Fahrenheit.

 By: Jay (Eire) : December 3rd, 2017-11:52
Definitely try to get in for 5-10 minutes to get used to the chill before the action kicks off. Congrats again. And I wonder how many strange looks you got with the 449 on your wrist as I'd assume everyone else had a Garmin or something equivalent.

Well done, and kudos for wearing a sport watch while actually taking part in a rugged sport activity :)

Too many desk divers and Walter Mitty's around Cheers, John

Like I always say

It needs to do what it says on the tin! I found wearing the Panerai very inspiring, those guys that wore them in the 40s were tough!

Thanks Bill!

I hope you were out on the water and living large too!

Sky swim also with Panerai ....

Great shot 👍

Best wishes Alkiro

Very nice!

Good to see the Panerai passion!

Is there a Geneva lake swim?!

 By: Harry2 : December 4th, 2017-14:45
I would definitely do that! Perhaps i should do a swim in every county I visit. Then afterwards we could have the Purist lunch of tartare, frites and wine If we had our own country, that would be the national dish!

Yes of course my friend

 By: Alkiro1 : December 4th, 2017-14:53
The name is “La traversée du lac” (lake crossing). Every year, you have 600 participants maximum for a distance of 1600m. Or, you can opt for the Lausanne triathlon. Regarding tartares and wines, trust me 😉 Best wishes Alkiro

This is happening.

 By: Harry2 : December 4th, 2017-18:41
I will make it so. It must be hard to qualify for the event though...

I think I will make it a goal for the year after next

 By: Harry2 : December 5th, 2017-00:31
Next year I have to finish my train driving course. Perhaps I can come to Geneva, do the swim and then meet the illustrious Alkiro1!

That is a fine accomplishment.

Well done, Harry.
