New PAM01628…very nice…but!

Seeing news articles about the new PAM01628. Looks like a lovely watch. But the chap writing it up in Fratellowatcges.com points out that it’s retailing at €10,700 - €3,500 more than the 914 with an eight-day movement (but without the simple cool looks and the ‘patina steel’ case finish.

That whopping pricetag hit me between the eyes with the first article I read and this one drives it home. I was all excited that maybe Panerai was starting to nail the product, after so many easily-criticised decisions…but…sorry, the value part of the equation just feels totally off here.

as the 914 is 44mm and has a bettarini case while the 1628 is 47mm and has a 1950s case. That being said I would go for the 914 personally

to do with the price differential. I'll play broken "record": for a Panerista a 47mm 1950 luminor, clean and simple, it's worth twice as much as a 44mm with a "8 giorni" on the dial. For other people that look at a watch "on its mechanical merits", the 8 ...
