I am reading this thread with great interest, as many of you know I have been adding several Panerai reference in the past few months, focusing mostly on reference with some tie to the past and the perceived DNA...

When I saw their release from this year none of them spoke to me.  I understand their need to cater to a broader audience if it mean their survival but I would still like them to consider and nourish their harder core fans as well as some point.  I fully understand to do that they first need to be in business!  For me their several releases around 2016-2018 are examples of the DNA I like and I think many purist love as well.  I just hope they don’t just forget about this part of their albeit very short history.  In the mean I will continue to enjoy the references I got which have nothing to envy to the newer ones!

Panerai's current trajectory, is it a sensible one ?

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 26th, 2021-18:29
I want to get everyone’s opinion of the brand’s trajectory in the last couple of years. As some of you would know, I started out my collecting journey with Panerai during the mid noughties and slowly gravitated towards other brands. A recent trip to the b...

My messages (whatever I typed) are still not getting reflected..

Your question has no answer.....

 By: sergio : April 26th, 2021-21:41
What do you base the "trajectory" on: balance sheet? Turn over? Profit (PBT - PAT?), market share? Client's base expansion or.??

I mean trajectory as with current offerings...

How do you view the watches and are they moving in the right direction? If not what do you hope to see ?

Let me see.....

 By: sergio : April 27th, 2021-03:14
if their balance sheet shows profits, if they have a wider client base, the answer is: YES they are. If they don't make profits and their market share is going nowhere, the answer is: NO, they are not. All I wanted to buy from Panerai, I did buy...already...

Unless I’m really off the mark on this it would seem from the outside Panerai is booming.

 By: Jay (Eire) : April 26th, 2021-22:18
Selling more watches, at a much higher average price point, more broadly popular and not just the insiders or cult watch it was in the 2000s. If that is all true, the trajectory is exactly as it should be for a commercial enterprise looking to hit revenue...

are they selling more watches? to dealers maybe...but I don't see that being converted to end user sales and wrists....

 By: SALMANPK : April 26th, 2021-23:54
I used to see them in the wild more before, I can't speak for the world but in Kuwait at least they are struggling, they shutdown their flagship boutique because they didn't sell a single piece in months, yet there are lines outside Cartier, Rolex and Pat...

I guess my perception is different and it’s just that, a perception. It could be wildly off the mark.

 By: Jay (Eire) : April 27th, 2021-00:37
I do see Panerai to be more widely know and popular. The company must be far more successful financially than 10 years ago, no?

Maybe there are.....

 By: sergio : April 27th, 2021-05:49
more than you think. Perhaphs you don't..recognoise a lot of models as Panerais and you don't look as keenly as you used to; plausible? lolllllllllllll

That’s very true.

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 27th, 2021-10:40
The Paneristis were a hard core bunch lol

I guess what does one mean by popular?

 By: Jay (Eire) : April 27th, 2021-17:27
You are of course right in terms of the buzz or hype of Panerai of the 2000s being gone, but are they selling more or less watches now than in the previous two decades? Someone else may have better insight than I but Panerai is mainstream for many years n...

Thanks for your reply. You are right...the boutique in SG I visited claimed that business is thriving. I also think you aren’t wrong to say they have no time for nostalgia. Heard some complains from old collectors that they aren’t really taken care of. ...

I think Sergio gave a good perspective.

 By: Bill : April 27th, 2021-03:36
For me i just see their evolution as going from a cult brand with devotees to a what we could call mainstream luxury brand with customers. I lost my way a few years ago but still have a dozen in my collection from the Bonati era.

What people tend to forget....

 By: sergio : April 27th, 2021-04:15
is that Panerai is 22 years old. Not 50, not 100....only 22! Companies are still very young and still trying to "figure out" not only how to stay in business, but also how to grow and prosper, surrounded by brands that have MADE the history of watchmaking...

Yeap...

What you and Bill said indeed sounded logical. I’m not sure if if I am correct. But I suspect Panerai lost a bit of its “soul” or “old school charm”? I’m intrigued with the new stuff but I also do find myself sitting on the fence undecided. Some comments ...

You puzzle me a great deal....

 By: sergio : April 28th, 2021-09:00
you mention "soul" or "old school charm" and then you like and you have..your eyes on..an absolute TRAVESTY of a chronograph, that has nothing whatsoever to do with neither "soul" nor "old school charm". What gives??

Sergio, relax...

I have a wide appreciation for many things. Watches, music, art, i enjoy a wide spectrum. I like the old school charm of the vintage, Pre Vs and Pre A series. But some of the more modern looking PAMs are also quite nice. Example, the earlier Radiomir SEs ...

I have my eye on that chronograph too? As in you like it? No, because if you do, you should not be worried by the company's direction, they will produce plenty of these models, I'm sure

Yes I kinda like it !!

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 27th, 2021-17:40
I am not worried, I’m just thinking real hard about the brand that brought me into the world of watch collecting and what it current means to me. I don’t have an answer YET, but this juncture I guess I’m feeling more of nostalgia than of the desire to own...

Some of what t-4-2 said resonates with me. I don’t possess great knowledge of the historical Grey market price on Panerai watches or even the counterfeit market that produces them. But, lower grey market Panerai prices (for quite a large number of models)...
