Thanks darrony for these additional info. I did not realize about the sapphire and I like this difference. Also good point about the minute markers!

In any case since I would rarely wear more then two days in a row anyway the rate accuracy becomes less relevant! This will likely become more of week-end watch or casual watch - thank you for your input

Calling on the Panerai expert! Which would you choose?

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-11:16
Dear fellow purist, Panerai is a brand I still wonder why I do not own yet and I have been thinking of getting a Panerai for a while now. I am no expert between all their models but two of them picked my interest. First I am looking for no date, small sec...

Yes i think i am leaning there. However at first i associated Panerai signature with the lock on top of the crown which the 995 does not have.

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-11:23
So do you think the 995 is more likely to stand the test of time i guess?

looks real nice with the fabric strap! Thanks for sharing these pictures!

No message body

I see what you mean!

;)

 By: amanico : December 3rd, 2020-00:49

Agree ... for sure 995

thank you Ahoi!

Have you considered ...

Something else, without small seconds but one to own ... ...

I will try to see if the AD has one in stock

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:00

Good luck ...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : December 2nd, 2020-13:26
You may have to hunt the secondary market

yes good point!

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:30

I would suggest.....

 By: sergio : December 2nd, 2020-12:26
to look for a Fiddy NOS (a.k.a. PAM127), which would satisfy both your requirements. 3-6-9-12+second counter and guard bridge. For the first Panerai, I it would be just great. If it were to become the first and....last....it would be an even better choice...

I understand that you're not....

 By: sergio : December 3rd, 2020-02:17
a Panerista, let alone a Panerai purist but the...only...similarity the PAM674 and the PAM127 share is the...PANERAI on the dial. The 127 is considered one of the icons of the brand and exudes tradition. The other, the 674, is a "pretty" commercial model,...

Thanks Sergio! I am certainly learning a lot from all the comments here which help me understand some of their reference much beyond what I was expected

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 3rd, 2020-03:25
I understand your point about the 674 vs 127 where my initial thinking was purely based on the high level dial layout...but I also agree the 127 exude something special not present in the 674

I had the exact question myself: which one?

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 2nd, 2020-12:41
Don't you think a first Panerai needs that typical crown guard? The "green" one (sorry Paneristi for my lack of knowledge of Panerai references😣) is very, very nice, yes, but as a second or third Panerai in a collection.

I personally don’t think so.

 By: Ahoi : December 2nd, 2020-12:54
Historically The first panerai didn’t had the crown guard. That was introduced with the third generation of u want to say so. Have look on that picture. From the left to the right you see the evolution. My first panerai was as well something similar to th...

Strong demonstration. ;)

 By: amanico : December 2nd, 2020-13:00

I will never be a Paneristi: You caught me with my pants dropped down! (Mit heruntergelassenen Hosen)

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 2nd, 2020-13:01
Now that you mentioned It, I think I recall that evolution also. Do I get away with it to say: a modern (!) Panerai needs a Crown guard?

From both mentioned it is really hard to decide!

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 2nd, 2020-13:14
I wouĂśd say the 995.

this is where I am leaning for sure

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:28

a bourbon would be good just about now!

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:31

I have had a few 😀

By: COUNT DE MONET : December 2nd, 2020-13:33

i will do my best to catch up!

thanks for the comments and observations!

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:28

nice evolution!

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:27

Glad i am not the only one with that question. Though between the two references i quoted in the opening post i could see how the green one could become more "timeless"

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 2nd, 2020-13:26
I think for me the question i probably need to answer first is will I be able to live with a watch with a rate accuracy far from a chronometer performance. I guess i kind of already partially answered that one by the very existence of this thread!

Chrono, you should not stress on time accuracy for a watch with dial with no minute markers 😊

 By: Darron : December 2nd, 2020-13:51
I do like the 995 dial configuration, similar to 127 (all 4 numerals and small second hand). The 995 is a special 1940 radiomir because it has domed sapphire (most other have flat sapphire or domed plexi) and there no “automatic” written on the dial, whil...

Thanks darrony for these additional info. I did not realize about the sapphire and I like this difference. Also good point about the minute markers!

Green 995 here

Duly noted sir! Thanks for the input!

I am no expert at all — but I have been thrilled with my recent purchase of a PAM 775...

 By: orahu : December 2nd, 2020-14:52
The 44 mm dial is extremely comfortable on my 6.5” wrist. The crown guard was important to me, so that ruled out the Radiomir. The 775 has a clean dial, no date or seconds hand at 9.00 o’clock — I thought I might miss the seconds hand, but no concern abou...

Thanks for the input agyzace. Duly noted!

+1 for the 995

 By: Arronax : December 2nd, 2020-18:10
I think automatic on the dial of any classic pam is an eyesore, less of a problem on the submersible. As a daily wear the crown lever is less of a hassle than the screwed down crown, however the 995 is an auto so the point is moot. If you like green the p...

Another vote for the 995.

 By: Jay (Eire) : December 2nd, 2020-18:16
But I do sympathize with your crown guard comment as this is for 99% of buyers a signature design feature. That said, if a crown guard is a must the 127/Fiddy would be a great choice. I do find the 995 a very powerful and pure look, and that green is craz...

Thanks Jay...while I focused on the crown guard at first I also realize common theme I like about the other references mentioned in the trends

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 3rd, 2020-03:30
I am starting to conclude that the vintage feel of the dial layout and dome crystal for some of these like the 127 is really what I am after here...hence leaning toward the 995

Hands down 995 :-) (nt)

IF it is one of many then 995, otherwise...

 By: PoyFR : December 2nd, 2020-19:24
although the green dial is very attractive it can prove difficult to pair it with everyday clothes. In terms of signature, both models feature them, of course the crown protection is an additional signature and it is unique to Panerai. Personally if I had...

The 690 is very nice as well

Too many...

 By: PoyFR : December 3rd, 2020-07:04
Out memory I'll say 372, 663, 662, 1080, 587, 127, 217, 590, or 609, 190, 339 But what is more important is the one you like.

Thanks for the input Tony Originally i was looking for a reference similar to the one you have (with green dial) but ...

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 3rd, 2020-06:27
I believe yours do not have the arabic numeral at 9 oclock - but seeing yours confirmed i liked their green dial

One distinction that does not seem to be acknowledged here . . .

 By: Jim14 : December 3rd, 2020-09:00
is the fact that the watches you are looking at both have sandwich dials and not sausage dials. I have always preferred sandwich dials, but I notice some of the recommendations here may include sausage dials. Having said that, I have had about a dozen PAM...

This one looks superb. However with the lighting am not sure what color of dial is it?

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : December 3rd, 2020-12:12
Also, pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between a sandwitch dial and sausage dial?

The colour of the 605's dial is this...

 By: sergio : December 3rd, 2020-13:21
You can notice the "sandwich" dial. The one below, has..grooves on the dial, painted or filled with luminous material (Radium, Tritium, Luminova, Super luminova). ...

ah ok thank you Sergio - very clear!
