2 possible directions?
Dec 11, 2012,08:00 AM
I could see 2 potential directions for new case shapes.
The first would be a fresh look at the roots of Panerai. Diving. I'd be curious to see what an ultimate diving watch, imagined by Panerai would be. The subs, and Egi stand as historical signposts, but a fresh interpretation of "Diving" could be very compelling. It would include an iconic re-imagining of the CG, some kind of rotating bezel, internal or external and a fresh, tool like dial design. Very tough and robust looking overall.
The second direction could be a step beyond the Rad case into a slimmer, dressier shape. I've always loved the smooth flow welded wire lug Rad cases, as well as the solid lugs like on the 399. I think there's room to evolve these two kinds of lug shapes, with a slimmer case, and big crown. The new exposed crown could serve as a new iconic detail, similar to how the CG does now.

Sure, but not necessary

If anything, I'd like to see a new case with the crown perhaps positioned away from the center of the wrist. Or perhaps more subtile crown protection would be cool. (In the vein of Bremont's Supermarine, for instance.)
No! Definitely not.

A new case should be an elegant, dressy one, which should not have a crown protector, of course! Best, Nicolas
It's not a must for me ...

but maybe a new kind of style crown protector would be cool :)

Yes or No. But it needs to be immediately recognizable as Panerai
By: patrick_y : December 11th, 2012-10:14
Two main objectives with the new case: 1. Recognizable as Panerai 2. Some tribute or similarity to a historical Panerai timepiece. I was thinking of a smaller Mare Nostrum style case a few days ago. But I feared this wouldn't be recognizable immediately. ...
Does it really need to be recognizable as a Panerai?
By: AnthonyTsai : December 12th, 2012-18:44
If a new case debuts anytime in the near future, I actually wish the case is unrecognizable Panerai at first glance. Why? Because I want something different and new . I want a new case which has its own identity so my collection can diversify. I don't wan...
Hmm... That could work...

I was really starting to like the idea of a normally sized Mare Nostrum but you want something entirely different. The main thing is it has to be long-term, tasteful, and elegant. For instance, the Cartier Ballon Bleu is a questionable creation, will this...

sure i'd love to see a new case - something completely different, but realistically, how much could they deviate without losing too much of their identity? Of course they could make somethng totally radical that no one else has done, which would make it i...
You pose very good questions
By: AnthonyTsai : December 14th, 2012-16:46
I don't know the answers but it's something Panerai should ask themselves. If they paid me the big bucks to think of the answers to your questions, I'd come up with something specific. But since I'm just a regular Joe Schmoe, I'm just talking in generalit...
