My experience

Mar 21, 2017,13:38 PM

I'm really sorry to hear this, Michael.
Last year, I noticed the power reserve on my Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours was running low. So I decided to walk into an AD just to get their take. It was by far the absolute worst customer experience I had in my life. I walked out fuming.

But with Robin's help, I got in touch with the right people at the HQ and it was smooth sailing from that point on. I didn't like the differential treatments but I liked the idea that my watch was taken care of in the end.

Uh oh, time for a bad 1858 Tachymeter post: mine is completely dead :-(

Well, when I think of all the praise we have collectively heaped upon this awesome watch, it was bound to happen that sooner or later one would fail. And it's mine. I purposely did not wear it for a few weeks to give some other watches a chance. Picked he...

Thanks, Alkiro. [nt]

That is really bad luck ! Feel sorry for you...

 By: Mike H : March 16th, 2017-09:53
As you said statistically it had to happen once to someone. Bad luck for you, the horological gods have decided it would be you just like a lightning which hits blindly... Cross fingers it is only a minor malfunction that will be repaired rapidly... Keep ...

My Nana used to say "It's only a thing"

She was right. But it still is a little disappointing. Nonetheless, I always believe in giving a fair chance to the manufacturer to correct such an issue. I gave it to AP when the crown on my 15202 came loose last year, and they rewarded me in spades with...

Positive thinking, it's gonna be ok very soon for sure !

 By: Mike H : March 16th, 2017-12:44
For sure Michael, for sure !

Hopefully just an easily fixed issue

 By: Harry2 : March 16th, 2017-10:02
That once rectified won\'t be a problem again. A little pain now for very little problems later! All the best, Godspeed!

Thanks my dear friend. Much worse things in life...

This is not tooooo bad ;-)

That sucks big time

Hopefully it will get restored asap

Hoping it is something minor...

 By: KMII : March 16th, 2017-12:04
And that your service experience will be as good as your last AP one Keeping fingers crossed!

So do I :) [nt]

Sorry to hear Amigo

 By: jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) : March 16th, 2017-16:21
i am confidently Montblanc will service it well and it's still under warranty so no worries there. Unless you have a Villeret watchmaker in the USA (we have one in Singapore), it will have to go back to the Villeret manufacture for servicing I believe Kee...

I'm reasonable, and am OK with it going to SUI

 By: MichaelC : March 16th, 2017-20:07
I just want it fixed correctly the first time, I'm sure they will handle it.

I can feel your disappointment Michael.

 By: fernando : March 16th, 2017-17:08
It happened to me once; a brand new watch, dead on its tracks the second day no matter what I did to try and revive it. I took it back to my AD who offered me one of two options: return it to the factory and get it fixed ( long wait) or get a full refund....

Fernando, I appreciate your reply.

 By: MichaelC : March 16th, 2017-20:09
I of course have had this one for months, and it is a favorite. So I am OK with a repair. Still hard to imagine such a new watch can fail.

It is probably something minor and hopefully it will be fixed

There is a great saying (from an American): 1- don't sweat the small stuff 2- everything is small stuff. I need to listen to that more myself!

Good words, Poky.

 By: MichaelC : March 16th, 2017-20:10
We should all abide by them.

Hope they will fix it soon

 By: mj23 : March 16th, 2017-23:15
I trust Montblanc will do the right thing.

Thank you, mj23. [nt]

Sorry to hear this Michael...

 By: AlexSunrise : March 17th, 2017-11:04
By what you describe it sounds like it could be an escapement issue? An easy fix, hopefully. On a side note, and sadly so, the only time I have handled an 1858 like yours, was a few months back in a MB exhibit where the watch suffered the same issues as y...

Thanks Alex. Maybe a problem common to the 16.29?

 By: MichaelC : March 17th, 2017-21:13
Hopefully for the rest of the owners it is not.

Maybe common... had the same problem...

Normally I would have been one of the later owners. I orderd one and the dealer got a last piece in February. Directly from Montblanc, sealed. We opened it together and the disappoitnment was big: the watch was dead. It was unwound but after winding, noth...

This is alarming.

 By: MichaelC : March 19th, 2017-18:32
I wish I could say I have no concern about mine being repaired, but the truth is the wind is a bit out of my sails. 3 known examples now. And I have been one of the biggest proponents of this watch since its was announced. If I were in your shoes, I would...

500 hours...

 By: p.boxster : March 20th, 2017-10:22
I\'m not sure if this watch gets the 500 hours control. Isn\'t it only the Heritage Chronometrie Collection that gets this test and Certificate? My ExoTourbillon has it, the Orbis Terrarum doesn\'t. And I think the 1858 didn\'t have this Certificate eithe...

I just find it puzzling that it broke after 8 months of flawless performance.

 By: MichaelC : March 21st, 2017-08:01
Also, the service experience so far leaves some to be desired, and they have not even received the watch. So it is just a confidence thing really... I've lost it in the movement, and I don't feel anything close to the way AP handles a watch for service. I...

That is a pity. I know mine needs to go to Switzerland

 By: MichaelC : March 22nd, 2017-09:36
I had to pay to send it to MB Texas, and they will forward it apparently. Already a big difference from my recent AP experience, they log the watch into the system before anything is ever shipped, and then they send me a fully insured return kit. It is li...

Sorry to hear this.

Annoying problem to have for sure early on during ownership. I hope MB provides good after sales service - to be taken seriously they must do this...

Thanks willski. Let's see how they do, I'll report the outcome either way.

 By: MichaelC : March 21st, 2017-11:58
I hope it can be strong praise at the end. The watch is in their hands as of today.

Shouldn't at least shipping be free?

 By: KL670 : March 25th, 2017-13:12
When I was in touch with the right people, I was given the option to drop off my watch at an AD or a UPS with shipping paid for by MB. Obviously I wasn\'t going to go back the AD where I was accused of messing with the watch myself. So I chose UPS. In the...

You would thinks so for a warranty repair.

 By: MichaelC : March 25th, 2017-14:55
The Montblanc "concierge" (they do not give out a phone number for their own service center, you call the concierge and they relay any message) informed me I can drop it at a MB Boutique (which I do not have in my state) or I can pay to ship it myself. Wh...
