SIHH 2018: Montblanc Photo Report - Exploration, Racing, and beautiful Chronograph....

Jan 18, 2018,23:54 PM

The booth is almost the same as the previous years.  But this year, they emphasize "mountains" more, so the booth has mountain-like structure, as well as the auditorium inside.

Montblanc watch this year has three pillars - or rather the new CEO decided to have more focused lines than before.

1. Minerva has 160th Anniversary this year - since 1858, of course.  Lots of new 1858 Collection.  Montblanc=mountain, particularly "Seven Summits", that is used as a theme for "Adventure/ Exploration" and therefore more masculine type watches.

2. TimeWalker Collection for Professional/ Sport watches.

3. New Star Legacy Collection.  The new Nicolas Rieussec chronograph.

These are the key milestone for 2018 Collection of Montblanc, which, to me, makes more sense than "everything and anything" approach.  There have been too many collections and the focus was a bit blurry....  Of course, great watches here and there all the time (e.g. 1858 Monopusher Chronograph), but as a brand, the focus was not there.

1. 1858 Collection

1858 Geosphere - Bronze case LE of 1858.  Bund Strap version.

Northern Hemisphere on 12h, Southern Hemisphere on 6h.  Both moves as the time progresses.  Seven Summits are shown with the red dots on those spheres.

SS version is not LE.  Catalog Model.

1858 Automatic Chronograph.  NATO strap looks so nice on this one.

1858 Automatic Chronograph leather strap version.

On the back is the relief of Montblanc.

1858 Automatic Chronograph in Bronze case.

For those weak skin, the case back is made of titanium, so no worries.

1858 Automatic.  Simple and relatively thin one, thickness 11.07mm.

1858 Pocket Watch LE of 16
Red Gold Case, Block Obsidian Dial.

With compass.

1858 Pocket Watch: Titanium case, Blue Dumortierite dial - LE of 100

Stands like this.  This is my personal best this year.

Lastly, but not least, 1858 Monopusher Chronograph, LE of 100 pieces.

The position of monopusher as well as the finish of the SS case makes this look like a real vintage watch.  Very well executed.  And this year, it is just 40mm.  Wonderful size.
I am sure different colors will come in time....

That said, the movement is too delicious to wait and see smile)

Next, TimeWalker Collection - "Every Race is a Journey"

TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph on the bund strap.  So sharp.

Ceramic bezel and pusher cover.

Rotor is shaped as the steering wheel.  Every Race is a Journey smile

Although not novelty, this TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic looks really good on the bund strap.

And the last focus - New Star Legacy Collection.  One of the "Star" collection is Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph.

Newly designed dial with guilloche pattern and date window looks real Classic.

Addendum:
Hugh Jackman came to the booth!  Enjoyed his talk about his experience with mountains - he and his son climbed Mr. Fuji when he was shooting in Japan.  Wow, even I have not climbed (yet) smile)  Very nice chap indeed.

So, with this vast, yet more focused targets collection, did you find something you like?

Ken

Two possible reasons

The first is the one that Montblanc's representatives explained to me; the watch looked too thick and pot-bellied as a 43. They believe that increasing the diameter will create a flatter profile that might attract more interest. The second possibility is ...

Thanks a lot for your great report, Ken!

Fully agreed that the new three line approach is nicely focused and easy to understand. As for favourites, have to say the Green definitely raised my interest, need to see it live at some point Also find that adding chronographs to the 1858 line (apart to...

although they should stop with the fake patina colors on their numbers. I love the Geosphere in Bronze, a very romantic piece. S
