Montblanc 1858 Bronzo with salmon dial a nod Minerva gold plated movement

 By: GreatPilot@me.com : November 11th, 2020-19:57
Hi all, I’ve owned this watch for about a year and never posted it. I have the 1858 blue dial as well but the this one is the keeper. Enjoy the photos...Jim ...

I can't get past the pen thing...

...maybe they should have spun off another band just for watches...Toyota/Lexus.

That would be like some 50 years ago with Ferrari (pens) and Dino (watches)

they retail pens up to 2.5 million USD; pen collectors purchase these watches without hesitance because of the brand and not in opposition to it

exactly and solely

there are collectors for Porsche Design watches for decades now and no one complains about a car manufacturer producing watches ;-) the umbrella of a brand can however help to present products within loyal / existing customer groups

Yes, I understand, but I am a graphics and branding guy...

...it's how I made my living for many decades. They should have pursued the Lexus strategy imho. At least they are wise to not erase the movement brand...

Wise and ... Fair.

Well said Amanico and again the price point is

In the realm of most of us...Jim

Thanks, Jim.

Depends...

 By: mdg : November 12th, 2020-13:16
...I am a buy and never sell guy so I would only buy what I love. But many are collectors and people who buy and sell. To those who resell, branding is a huge factor, like it or not.

I'm afraid so...unless you have a TON of money, nobody wants to buy...

 By: mdg : November 13th, 2020-07:34
...a watch for $80k and sell it five years later for $40k. Rich people didn't get rich by doing that. I have a friend who only buys very nice Pateks and limited (mostly) Langes. He will never lose money on any of them.

I am sorry to say and no offense, but...

I don't care for the other 10% because I have a good profession so I must no act as a private watch dealer. It is ridiculous to purchase only watches that possibly gain value as long as you don't have to earn your living with it. Which cars do you purchas...

I only buy (watches and cars) what I like because I don't sell watches and drive cars until they are old...

 By: mdg : November 13th, 2020-12:11
..then I donate them to charity. But I am not in my friend's league by about 10x : )

;)

pen collecting is worse than watch collecting

 By: penfriend : November 13th, 2020-04:26
if you get drawn into into and at some point receive permission to purchase the highly limited editions this will sum up to more money than can be spend on watches in my experience. whilst the creative horizon for watches is somehow limited (materials, co...

Nota a bad idea

However at the price point it is a fabulous watch...Jim

so recognizable

 By: Weems@8 : November 13th, 2020-12:38
I tried to love pens and also Montblanc pens. I like do hand writing. But i have no wish to buy expensive pens or collect pens. I like to collect miniature cars, watches, vinyl records, watch books. No pens, rollerballs. ...

I agree - this one is a keeper

First time i saw it was on the wrist of Jerome Lambert - was very impressed and liked it more than the blue version. Congratulations!

Thanks for the posts Penfriend

Great points...Jim

Spectacular! I think this my favorite 1848. You seem to have changed the strap, do you have a picture of the watch where we see your new strap?

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : November 12th, 2020-04:04
It seem darker then the original and seem to fit well the watch...

The strap is the OME strap...JIm

Beautiful watch

 By: Watchonthewrists : November 12th, 2020-12:52
With a amazing movement

I have no problem with the pen story

 By: Weems@8 : November 13th, 2020-12:51
Montblanc making pens and watches, Omega make sunglasses, at least they let produce sunglasses. It is no reason for me to skip Montblanc. The resurrection of Minerva is a great thing, others and i appreciate that. The strong competition in the watch world...

I agree Weems

I agree Weems, I have a very diverse collection but I have clearly went towards independence Brands as I have matured as a collector. I believe this Mont blanc is beautiful and also a value proposition, not to make money but you at least retain its value ...
