Another time, another state of mind...
In the Fifties, Humanity saw the most inspiring, crazy and enthusiastic projects and challenges, on Earth as well as in the Space... Science and Adventures.
When it comes to Chronometry and Jaeger-Lecoultre, two dates are very important, which announced and celebrated two events:
- July 1957 / December 1958: The International Geophysical Year.
The International Geophysical Year (1957-58) was conceived as an attempt to coordinate globe-wide measurements of the Earth, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the Sun. Such a large undertaking required and successfully acheived international cooperation in a time of increasing geopolitical tension. The extraordinary accomplishments of the IGY are legion:
•The discovery of the Van Allen belts that ring the earth.
•The launching of the first artifical satellite (Sputnik).
•The charting of ocean depths and ocean currents.
•A detailed study of the Earth's magnetic field that soon lead to the revolutionary plate tectonics theory.
•Measurements of upper atmospheric winds

The I.G.Y Logo will certainly remind you something, for all those who wondered abourt the origins of the Planisphere used in several Jaeger-Lecoultre watches:
Even some stamps were launched to celebrate the event, which says a lot about its impact and popularity!
- 1958: The Jaeger-Lecoultre " Jubilé ", to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Grande Maison founding, which will give birth to some very interesting watches, which belong to the Chronometers Family, undisputably: The Geophysic, and a certain Master Mariner... Which will announce the reign of Automatic Chronometers!
