My last few months mantra.."watchmaking or moneymaking?..watchmaking…."
Apr 11, 2014,00:45 AM
Well,
a mantra that resonate so much in my head lately and that make s me see things differently…much differently..
I am the last person to judge on Vintage watches or re/editions,tributes etc,but from what I can see and ponder for myself this is a big huge NO NO.
C mon,the spirit ,the essence, the charm of such an iconic watch completely raped for……market purpose?Really?
Lets forget how expensive it could have been if a manual movement was developed(after all we do not discuss prices here on Purists),all we have to judge is:the final product.
Its way too simple and wrong at the same time to say "Oh well it looks like the original enough, otherwise it would have cost waayyyy more to do a good job",don t you think? Is that the answer you expect from your favourite brand?Or is it a bit of disappointment?….Good jobs, well done ones OBVIOUSLY cost more….thats why JLC this time cut a huge corner….cheap very cheap move.
Other solutions could have been:develop a movement(the Huge cost of it ,for such a huge brand ,is all to be proven by the way),don t call it a tribute to..or….don t do it if you can't afford it.
Do not let the love we have for the brand overtake your real feeling,in this case its like trying to excuse our cheating wife just because we love her so much.
What if Vacheron or GP payed a tribute to an iconic watch with a random movement? We will be more critical I suppose…..or Panerai?Well they do that all the time
,but they get a lot of stick for that….Well JlC this time did a move Mr Bonati would be very proud of……You called it Monerai after all ,didn t you?
Best my friend.
