Call me picky but...

Feb 02, 2014,03:30 AM

….there a some things here that I just don't get.

First, I think 40mm is too big for a simple watch face.  There is just too much blank space.  I had hoped that JLC were returning to more elegant and wearable sizes.

Second, I don't think that the blue seconds hand looks right on a gold watch.  With a white metal watch it provides a nice contrast, but blue on gold looks wrong.  A gold hand would be better.

Third, the hands.   On the earlier (2000 on) iterations of the Master RDM and Master Control date, the dauphine hands were too short and thick.  The alpha hands never looked right to me on a watch.  The current Master Control date and Master Triple Calendar have got the hands right - perfect length and thickness.   I had hoped that we would see similar hands on other new models, but this watch has similar hands to the current Master RDM - too thin and needle-like, so that at the central pivot they have to thicken to a circular shape instead of the perfect triangular lines of the dauphine hands.

Fourth, I have never been a fan of a date window at 6 o'clock.

Sorry to be so negative but they are my personal views!  Perhaps I am too critical.

JLC SIHH 2014: Master Ultra Thin Date.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-00:10
Here is another Ultra Thin Watch, from the 2014 collection, the Master Ultra Thin Date. The recipe is smart and elegant. Smart, because there are people who absolutely want a date, and who want to taste the pleasures of the ultra thin case. That offer mis...

Pure purity.

 By: WTA : February 1st, 2014-00:36
This model is what I describe as pure, no flaws. I always felt so overwhelmed when I see this model of JLC. Thank you very much for sharing Nicolas. WTA

The good thing is that there are so many MUTs that it will not be difficult to

Find the one made for you. Best, Nicolas

Timeless beauty.. Elegant noblesse.. Somehow, however..

 By: hs111 : February 1st, 2014-01:28
.. it seems to me a bit ,a sort of well- thought "compromise" between the puristic plus elegant appeal and the answer to a functional "necessity", ie the inclusion of the Date functionality, - On a personal perspective , I still would prefer no Date.. The...

You described the " necessity of a compromise " very well, hs.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-01:34
As for a WG MUT, wait a bit... I will come back with something which may please you... Best, Nicolas.

Something u say ;)

 By: flamenco : March 29th, 2014-19:21
Do tell ! On a serious note, always wonder JLC does no do A Brown strap with their WG pieces ?!? That would make the MUT irresistible !

I actually like this iteration a lot

 By: rnaden : February 1st, 2014-01:35
And the date at 6 o'clock gives the dial a better balance and symmetry when compared to the traditional 3 o'clock position.

Thanks for your input, Richard.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-01:37
That is, certainly, a clever offer from JLC. Some swear by the date and an automatic movement, here is theirs! Best, Nicolas.

Interesting reference, but...

 By: peregrino : February 1st, 2014-01:52
... in my opinion the philosophy behind a ultra thin watch is all about the "less is more" aproach to design! I am very happy I took the decision in 2006 and bought the original and very pure 34 mm Master Ultra Thin before it was too late and Jaeger disco...

I tend to agree with your approach of what has to be a MUT, Rob.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-01:58
But as said, there are quite a lot of people who ABSOLUTELY want a date and an automatic movement... Why not knowing the pleasures of a MUT case with these features? Is that for you, me and some others? No. But the pleasure is in the diversity. ;) Best, N...

I would like to compare side by side

This piece and the Richemont cousin from Vacheron, the Patrimony Contemporaine Similar look. I somehow feel the VC is a little more elegant and finished How do th other members feel? Best, Joe

True, but the retail on this one is a bit above 13 000 Euros.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-04:59
13 200 if I remember well.... Best, Nicolas.

Yes 50% retail higher price

 By: 4Js : February 1st, 2014-09:12
If you have seen the jlc vs Vc would you say the finish is that significantly better? I don't recall if the Vc movement is a derivative of jlc Thx Joe

I don't think the VC is worth twice the price.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-09:24
As for the movement, the " big " Patrimony has an auto movement? I didn't have that souvenir.... Best, Nicolas

The VC has the cal 2450 SC

 By: respo : February 3rd, 2014-06:35
...an in-house movement from VC, and quite a beautiful one. Side-by-side photos may not do the comparison of the JLC and VC watches justice, but side-by-side in-the-hand will reveal some differences. Whether the differences justify the price differential ...

Elegant design - and I find the center seconds hand as important an innovation

 By: watchthatman : February 1st, 2014-06:19
as the date function. To me the center seconds hand opens the face in a way that the small seconds on the MUT 38.5 or MUT Grande does not. I would love to see an MUT with center seconds hand but without the date.

Thanks for your input, watchthatman.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-06:37
Since there is a 38mm small seconds, I doubt JLC will ever release a 40 mm center seconds without date.... But who knows? Best, and welcome here, by the way. Nicolas

Thanks for the welcome Nicolas. It's a special forum

 By: watchthatman : February 1st, 2014-07:48
thanks to the knowledge, observations and passion if the people piston here.

You are right …the offer is tasty and..

 By: moc : February 1st, 2014-06:46
as often in JLC the line is becoming a bit confusing…..now that is JLC dna too…. Nice though,it will find lots of fans. Mo

Things will change. I had a long and interesting conversation with Mr Riedo.

 By: amanico : February 1st, 2014-07:13
The new JLC CEO... The willing is to reduce the collection. To focus on the product. Good news, isn't that? Best, Nicolas

Given the circumstances, I mean the SIHH " fury ", yes, it was a quite long conversation.

For a first contact, I had to discover The Man, who is totally different from Jérôme Lambert. There are of course things I cannot share, but there are two directions Mr Riedo wants to take: 1/ To reduce the collection, for a better legibility. 2/ To favou...

Dear Nicolas, thank you for the answer. I am very much looking forward to your report from the next visit to the Manufacture, and hopefully another talk with Mr. Riedo. Best, A.

This might have been asked before but I cannot find it.

Will the central second hand of the actual production watch be fashioned in blue or gold? Thank you for any info you can share. I am not in the market for this watch but two friends are interested. Ruckdee

Thank you.....

 By: Archy : February 2nd, 2014-04:10
Oddly - since it is JLC's entry level watch - I think the Master Control date is one of the nicest of JLC designs at the moment. All the points Ifind wrong with this watch are right in the MC. Aren't I fortunate to havesuch taste!

That is a vast debate...

 By: amanico : February 2nd, 2014-04:15
I love the design of the MUT 39, as well as the Tribute To Reverso 1931... And I don't ven speak about the Duometre(s). The good thing with this diversity is that we can have diverse opinions and favourites. But I do get your point. Best, Nicolas

I agree about the master control date

 By: watchthatman : February 2nd, 2014-10:19
I recently saw one at a dealer and it really drew me in. I typically don't like dates, but there is a real harmony on the MC date. I've been contemplating an MUT 41 or RDM, but the MC date really complicates matters. By the way, as with many of the JLC MC...

Hmmm - let's call it ... reasonable?

I must admit that in this case I would like to join the "no date" faction. While I like the useful side of a date for day by day use I do not want to have it at any cost. It needs to be well integrated into the design of the watch in question. Find it a n...

Then they have to think " What does the market want ". 12 years before, it was the Compressor Line. Now, it is the winning combo " Date + Auto ". Thanks for your input, Martin! Best, Nicolas

Lovely watch but

a question - how large is the date window & is the date clearly visible ? I found this to an issue in the VC - the date appearing too small.I agree that I don't think the VC justifies the premium over JLC considering the movement is a JLC ebauche. Cor...

Goo'day Nicolas and thank you for showing us.....

favorite VC - er, JLC of the bunch. (The JLC Patrimony?) I have the MGUT 40, which I love, but I often DO look for a date, which it does not have. I was hoping for a date within a subdial (like the old Gentilhomme 155.140.900) and was hoping JLC would "Au...

Thanks for showing this one

 By: respo : February 3rd, 2014-06:23
I agree with you that it is time for JLC to "rationalize the Ultra Thin Family a bit." It has actually gotten to the point where the ultra-thin offerings are confusing, at least to me. Well, that and the use of the term "ultra-thin" here is a bit misleadi...

Count on Mr Riedo to put some order in the family.

 By: amanico : February 3rd, 2014-07:38
Thanks for taking the time to answer twice, my friend. ;) Best, Nicolas

38 and 40 would be the best choice for me

 By: axel : February 5th, 2014-03:25
I have a MGUT 40 mm but I was glad to see the 38.5 mm because I am a bit annoyed by ever growing diameters, even for elegant watches. Even Lange introduced the 38.5 mm for the 1815. I think JLC could have just two sizes for the Ultra Thin line: 38 and 40 ...

I like it very much too...

 By: axel : February 5th, 2014-04:44
but I think it could be manufactured also in a 38 mm case... or , by the way, 38.5. Maybe we they could opt for 38.5 and 40 :)

I DO hope that on the definitive watch...

 By: watchme : February 10th, 2014-12:50
that the date disc is the same cream color as the dial. Otherwise, it looks like the brand "went cheap" with a simple, white, non-matching disc. -Dean
