JLC SIHH 2013: The Master Ultra Thin Perpetual 39.

 By: amanico : March 5th, 2013-22:17
Quantiemes Perpetuels and La Grande Maison... This is a long love story. Before unveiling the all new MUT 39 PC, let me invite you to a brief journey into time. A journey which started circa.... 1890, with the Calibre 19RMCSQ, or 10 years later ( 1903 ), ...

Beautiful...

 By: MervC : March 5th, 2013-23:26
I think JLC will sell a ton of these, chiefly because there is stainless steel version. For both the WG and SS version: I think the watch face will be more legible if the sub-dial hands are blued instead of silver colored.

SS

 By: ingmar : March 7th, 2013-06:20
I couldn't agree more. When I saw this and realized there was a stainless version I was both surprised and pleased. I think JLC is one of the few makers that realize stainless is a choice for some. It is for me at least. If only there was a boutique near ...

Buying a watch during a trip has an extra flavour, ingmar.

Still one of the best looking and legible perpetual calendar out there. Well done JLC.

I agree - visibility not good

 By: cazalea : March 9th, 2013-08:30
Hands just need to be darker for contrast. I\'d want the yellow gold for that reason.

Thank you Nicolas

 By: Dje : March 5th, 2013-23:55
Hi my friend, Here they are finally. It was clearly my watch of choice at the SIHH this year. The stainless steel version is now on top of my wish list. I won't get any watch this year, but in the future I hope so..... In fact the only competition could c...

Well, the White Gold dial was not ready when we were in Geneva, Jerome.

 By: amanico : March 6th, 2013-04:25
I discovered the white gold version one week ago! Yes, one of the clear successes for JLC, this year, I am ready to bet on that. Best, my dear friend, and thanks for the kind words. Nicolas

Thank you Nicolas for this very nice review......

 By: Sandgroper : March 6th, 2013-00:06
I really like the White Gold version due especially to the dial and the legibility which as you say is undisputable thanks to the dark hands. Very elegant watch and at 39mm instead of over 40mm very smart from JLC in my opinion. Cheers. Francois

We are never happy. ;) I would have loved a ss case with the wg dial.

 By: amanico : March 6th, 2013-04:29
Or the SS version, with a black dial... Seriously, they are beautiful as they are, and I deeply think that it is a good move from JLC. these UT cases are sublime, the size is restrained as well as the price ( SS version ), the dial is a classic of the kin...

It is too late now to change the dial of the SS, of course....

 By: Sandgroper : March 24th, 2013-05:20
But perhaps JLC could change or give as an option to change the silver hands on the SS for Blued hands! Then the SS is a killer! The reason been, it is quite hard to read the time from silver hand on a silver dial. I know as I have a Master Perpetual 37mm...

Great stuff

 By: rnaden : March 6th, 2013-00:15
I like the understated beauty of these complicated marvels. And the fact that JLC has decided to make it available in SS is a bonus as I'm not a big fan of precious metals on my watches. Definitely will be looking out for these. Thanks for the well writte...

Moreover, after reading your introduction and looking at...

 By: Sandgroper : March 6th, 2013-00:21
your pictures, how could someone not be in total admiration to the achievements of JLC. JLC is really La Grande Maison, awesome! Cheers. Francois

Thank you Nico,

 By: dr.kol : March 6th, 2013-00:48
it is a beautiful and very readable watch. There are some more inspiring perpetuals in noble metals but the SS version is among the very best or perhaps even nicest SS Perpetual I know. Will it really be available only from the Boutiques? Best, Kari

It's a pity

 By: dr.kol : March 6th, 2013-04:17
because a kind AD is giving me minus 25%. Should I buy that watch then from a Boutique? Something to think over... Best, Kari

That's good and bad - also from JLC's perspective

 By: dr.kol : March 6th, 2013-06:06
When more and more pieces are "Boutique only" at least I would be very upset if I were an AD. I would try to sell other brands that are more AD Friendly. JLC can never open Boutiques enough to control the whole production. I fully understand the benefits ...

Quite a complicated matter. In this specific case...

 By: axel : March 7th, 2013-14:23
the situation makes the pink gold version more interesting because the SS version gets almost no discount from boutiques while the PG should be purchasable for less than 20k Euro (if the list price of 25.6k is confirmed) from ADs, pretty near to the SS ve...

Wonderful review! Very interesting readings.

Wonderful review! Very interesting readings. Thanks so much for writing.

Absolutely amazing work that you've done Thank you so much for this perpetual love story Seminal post my friend Damjan

Sweet heavens. Proper, refined and yet functional.

 By: Ruckdee : March 6th, 2013-02:07
I don't think any encouragement is needed for a JLC fan looking for a classic perpetual calendar watch. This is it. I, on the other hand, can be satisfied by the significantly more affordable MUT 39 Moon if I were to buy a piece this dressy. Thank you for...

MUT Moon, MUT Perpetual, Master 8 Days Perpetual, and the latest Master Calendar...

 By: amanico : March 6th, 2013-16:23
There is a great diversity, from the simplest to the most complicated. Each of these is a good choice, within everyone's budget. Or taste... Thanks for your input, Ruckdee. Best, Nicolas

I forgot to line the current models up in my mind. Yes, you are right.

 By: Ruckdee : March 6th, 2013-18:51
The current line-up also merits a post of its own when you return home? Much like what you did with this series of perpetual calendar watches? Ruckdee

Very interesting that JLC has decided to make the SS boutique only...

 By: apropos : March 6th, 2013-04:43
...interesting because that means that they will be able to lock down the price on SS models, which will traditionally sell the most!!

Just Curious

 By: 4Js : March 6th, 2013-04:56
Why did JLC elect to launch now versus at SIHH? I had posted on another post to you that the piece was showing in the iPad app, but not released at SIHH. And you responded with a wink!! No matter, your post was welcome news this morning, and as always a f...

For different reasons.

 By: amanico : March 6th, 2013-16:26
JLC wanted to launch it at the beginning of this year, during a Trip in the US... Which had to be postponed. Hence the IPad App, which showed it. Yes, see them in the flesh, you will appreciate them even more. I have no doubts about that. Best, Joe, and t...

Wasn't the IWC perpetual module introduced in the 'Lyre' line before 1987?

 By: Clavi : March 6th, 2013-05:39
I thought that the 'Lyre' line was released before the Odysseus, and there was definitively a Lyre Perpetual Calendar (which imho was much better looking that the very 80's dated Odysseus) This Lyre Perpetual is actually a nice looking watch by todays sta...

LOVE the white gold dial...

 By: watchme : March 6th, 2013-06:40
almost wonder if JLC was thinking about making that a "Boutique Only" version of the steel, initially. I'm glad to see JLC offering 18kt white again, which was almost eliminated after 2006 from the general core items (exceptions being "haute de gamma" cre...

You know that the story of this calibre is linked to an era where

 By: amanico : March 6th, 2013-16:34
JLC and IWC were very close... As fr the watch in itself, I too love al ot the dial of the WG version. Less understated than the SS brother, with more character, everybody will certainly have his own favorite. I appreciate a lot the return of a nice auto ...

That 18kt Rose version...

 By: watchme : March 6th, 2013-06:46
which appears after the historical stuff, is going to have to either go back to the factory, or sit until Christmas, since the calendar is a year ahead. Pity. ;-) -Dean

JLC do it again...

 By: Andy : March 6th, 2013-09:14
a very very well priced perpetual..! The only thing I would like to see is a few more sporty perpetuals as I can only think of IWC and AP who do one that would fit that category. However a perpetual isn't really a sport complication but I would like one.....

A gorgeous timepiece. The price of the rose gold...

 By: axel : March 6th, 2013-14:08
should be 25600, not 30000. Would you please kindly check and confirm, Nicolas? Maybe 30000 is the price of the white gold which is generally higher than rose gold. I plan to sell my MGUT 40mm and considering the rose gold version as an alternative to a L...

Why the addition of the Corrector?

 By: aaronm : March 6th, 2013-14:22
I've always wondered why JLC removed the nice "adjust with the crown" feature of the Odysseus with the addition of a corrector... This new steel one is quite nice.... A

I asked and was told so it can be set faster.

 By: cazalea : March 9th, 2013-08:39
"Everything adjusted by the crown" was a goal Kurt Klaus said he set for himself, and admirably achieved, but! If an IWC stops, you have to move ahead day by day very tediously to keep everything in synch. My Perpetual had sat in a case or 8 months when I...

I have forgotten to say...

Thanks you for the excellent report, Nicolas.

Thank you for this wonderful article

 By: foowy : March 6th, 2013-19:11
I have always loved the Master Perpetual. A very functional and practical complication and the best thing I love about it is its legibility. Not many brands can achieve that. The only other one that does better (for me) is the Moser Perpetual. And now wit...

It will come to your Boutique, without doubt. Let us know what you think, please.

Some gorgeous pocket watches

By: Mark in Paris : March 7th, 2013-06:13
I often think of these pocket watches as a very interesting alternative to wrist watches, especially in regard of the pricing compared to the complications. The 1928 one shows a remarkable case work and the dial of the 1934 is amazing. My fav among all th...

Thanks for the wristshots, Mark.

 By: amanico : March 7th, 2013-06:43
And did you notice that the surface of the white gold MUT 39 Perpetual has a grained finish? I really like this version. Thanks for your valuable input, too. Best, Nicolas

Grained finish

By: Mark in Paris : March 7th, 2013-10:41
No I didn't notice, but indeed on the pictures we can see it a little bit. Certainly better looking.

great report, enjoyed the history! here's the SS on wrist...

what a delightful watch! ...

first hand experience of this MUT Perpetual...

 By: FanFrancisco : March 13th, 2013-10:25
... just came back from the post SIHH 2013 event. have managed to try the WG version, feeling when wearing it on wrist was really pleasant. think it will be the top of my shopping this year :-) stefan

Aaah, you see! I told you! The SS version is very interesting, too.

Thanks for your input, my friend. Best, Nicolas

in love.

 By: tim_s : March 10th, 2013-13:06
this watch is absolutely stunning, no other way to describe it. I think the indices are some of the nicest looking i have ever seen! its great how JLC can make something this nice and keep the price at a sensible point as well. i really want this watch!! ...

Thanks for your input, Tim.

 By: amanico : March 10th, 2013-13:39
I think you won't be disappointed by another part of the watch, the case, whose profile is just superb. Best, Nicolas

Nicolas, thank you for a fantastic report!

Looking forward to see this one in the metal! Best, my friend Blomman

The MUT Perpetual is extremely tempting

 By: nitediver : March 17th, 2013-00:05
Thank you Nicolas for another report in oustanding qualiity - it is simply great to see the "lineage" of the JLC perpetual calendars in so much detail. My feeling is that this perpetual calendar will find many friends. I am very fond of the relaively slim...

The dial is one thing, an example of sobriety and classicism.

 By: amanico : March 17th, 2013-00:10
De bon gout. But the case is the cake on the cherry. :) Spectacular in terms of elegance. I am sure it will be a hit, especially the SS version, which is correctly priced. Best, Nicolas

My thoughts

By: Le Monde Edmond : March 25th, 2013-17:06
Nicolas, another great post with much detail. Well done. How you manage to write such in depth posts and respond to all your Emails is really a mystery! ;) My thoughts: The stainless steel is very appealing with the gray dial. I like it very much. And €16...

Thanks for your kind comments, Edmond. ;)
