Credit picture unknown, but I will gladly credit on request. Unveiled in 1998, in a limited edition of 500 pieces, as it case backs states... Top looking dial, which has the good taste to not display a date, which contributes to the purity of the watch, a...

Why Platinum?

I never understood the reasoning behind precious metals used on tool watches. Furthermore, I personally prefer the plain look of the plain MK12. Photo borrowed from the interweb: ...

Absolutely...

No date and why did they make the Platinum version without one but not the plain SS version?

BTW, the Mark 11 was without a date...

And then IWC decided to destroy the dial with the 12...😉 ...

Charming size. Although some would find too small. 😊

Thanks Indian. 👍

No doubt...

I think the current Mark XVIII 39-41 mm size is more universally suited. ...

Less charming, too... [nt]

Nice, but I find the use of platinum a bit of "overkill" here, if there

is such a thing. To me this is a so called "tool watch" and should be only stainless steel. Just an opinion but I think platinum should be reserved for more of a "dress watch" As mentioned, just an opinion.

Oh... very nice!

This piece was being auctioned by Antiquorum in Hong Kong on the 21st of April, 2018; lot 164. It is a subset of 80 pieces from a total of 500 pieces and was made for the Asian market. Its beauty has haunted me every since and, in my opinion, is one of IW...

Fully agreed with your opinion, and welcome . . .

. . . eighty pieces in platinum, the rest presumably made with other metals. Art

Perhaps it was 500 "total" and...

80 of them were this version destined for the Asian market.

Very strange...

From Steve G's website Art mentioned above: "Produced for the Asian market in 1998, the edition is 80 pieces numbered 301-399 (excluding all numbers which would include a "4")."

Crazy! [nt]

Nico got my attention on this one

So I went looking for more info. Apparently, this exact model you posted was intended for the Asian market and this other version with the blue dial was for the rest of the world (I think). Still digging... ...
