There's a trick with regards photography: last year's venue had such poor lighting that a request was made for lightboxes in the exhibition space and the organisers duly obliged. There were 2 at the event, but they were so busy that it's likely to increase to 4 next time. Last time I Was in Basel (a few years ago now) I already felt that the AHCI were in a very strange location as compared to my first visit in 2007. I suspect that some industry insiders and observers just don't see a future for a lot of small brands and they also get whisked around to exclusive events by the large conglomerates (Swatch Group's Time to Move for example) simply reinforcing a focus on mainstream products. What I did also notice is a creeping sense of impartiality in reporting as of recent with media outlets appearing to have a positive consensus on watches that the public have no patience for. It feels like a major crossroads as a lot of true innovation and creativity comes from the grassroots, but punters are only interested in purchasing timepieces from big names whilst desperately trying to retain value. I was asked whether I would purchase that crazy Cyrus (probably 6 figures) knowing full well that it's not a watch that I could sell on, let alone for anywhere near original value. My response was that if I had the resources and truly liked it, then yes. Independent watchmaking is about an unrequited obsession with horology.

Whilst the big news regarding UK based horological events was the postponement of Salon QP until 2020, 300 collectors, enthusiasts and a smattering of journalists, plus 18 independent brands, were present in the centre of London last night to celebrate al...
We can only hope that's the case.

Naturally, the independents struggle to garner the attention they deserve, and this type of event is significant in terms of exposure and, I think, format: a completely open and friendly occasion to go hands on with serious watchmaking and horological inn...

Great report! Was Charles Frodsham there, by any chance?
Truly my pleasure.

I meant to post the list of exhibitors (it is on the watchmakers ckub website in case you'd like to get an idea of the breadth of work on view). Richard Stenning of Frodsham was in attendance as an observer. I overheard a conversation with Richard and ano...

Thanks for this great and comprehensive reporting

I admire particularly the quality of the photos considering the usually difficult light situation at such exhibition venues. The remark about the Independents being shuffled into "corners" when part of a main stream watch show is so appropriate. Looking b...
