Today's trend (or maybe we can say the expectation from watch aficionados) is to make as much of a watch "in-house" as possible. For independents, maybe 50% or more. For brands that are part of a larger luxury group like LVMH, Swatch Group, or Richemont the term "in-house" may also encompass an entity that makes parts for the entire group such as ETA for Swatch Group or Val Fleurier for Richemont. Then you have the giant independents like Rolex and Patek that make just about everything internally (but it wasn't always like that as true vertical integration is somewhat of a new phenomenon in the Swiss watch industry although Seiko and Citizen in Japan have been doing it this way for decades out of necessity) .
I don't think there is a right or wrong in any of these approaches as long as everything is transparent. Look at Ming. Same thing.
