The Charles Frodsham Double Impulse Chronometer Wristwatch: On The Wrist!

Jan 05, 2021,05:09 AM

This came in just before New Year's and I wanted to share it with you. As you can see, I went with the 22k YG case. This was the first wristwatch to use George Daniels' double impulse escapement on Derek Pratt's suggestion and it is the only wristwatch to use Derek Pratt's shock protection system which is theoretically superior to current types in use. Vintage Rolex dealer James Dowling should have his delivered in a few months, so it'll be nice to compare notes with him. It's a dream to wind and wear. The movement has a lot of depth and the black polish in the English style of finishing is very nice. The hands and applied numerals are hand polished and flame blued to a blue purple in the English style. The watch is 42.2mm X 10.5mm thick, it slides easily under a shirt cuff. My wrist is a flat 7.25 inches, for comparison. For more information:

Many congratulations! Best wishes Jon

Thanks! HNY!

Well done on a great acquisition!!

 By: sham1 : January 5th, 2021-05:24
The watch was made for your wrist. My wrist is more than half an inch smaller so when I tried the watch on two years ago, it was too large despite the short lugs. Enjoy this very special watch which I consider to be one of the best time only watches on sa...

Thanks! It's so cool you were able to visit Frodsham.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-06:20
I hope to go there, maybe this time next year. The comparison between the RWS and CF is an apt one. Thanks again for your kind words.

You mean you bought the watch without trying it on?!

 By: sham1 : January 5th, 2021-14:59
Or maybe you did at a different venue? Either way you will enjoy visiting their small and only shop in London and the owners are a joy to converse with. Just beware that there are some old chronometers for sale that could prove very tempting especially no...

Yup, bought without seeing it in person or trying it on!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-16:32
I happened upon info that the watch was in development and emailed Richard on the very day it turned out to finally be offered to the public!!! I was accidentally the first person to respond practically the moment the announcement went out! I think Richar...

Wow, I salute you!!

 By: sham1 : January 5th, 2021-16:46
I guess having the right sized wrist helps making such a major decision.

I figured if I can fit 42mm Breguets, then this should be fine!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-16:58
But 36mm Breguets are nice, too.

Phwoar!

 By: sham1 : January 5th, 2021-22:37
42mm Breguets?? I struggle to wear 38mm Breguets no thanks to their straight lugs. For Breguets, 34mm to 36mm is ok for my wrist.

So true!

 By: sham1 : January 6th, 2021-07:05
But I prefer buying new and fortunately there still are a few good watches at 36mm and 37mm!

There are some so-called unisex or women's watches I would wear.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-07:32
A MOP Breguet chrono from a few years back, for example. Are there any that have caught your eye?

There are a few Breguets that fit the bill

 By: sham1 : January 6th, 2021-16:47
but my favourite vintage looking watch would be the Murakumo by Kikuchi Nakagawa which at 36.8mm seems perfect in size. The dial, hands and numerals are a work of art in that price category. the 35.5mm 5930 which has been in the collection for years. I do...

Those are all beautiful and I'd be happy with any on my wrist, good taste!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-17:03
The 9067 actually won an award at GPHG, I forget the category. I wore a 36mm Breguet today. ...

Thank you for saying so!

 By: sham1 : January 6th, 2021-17:09
As they say, it takes one to know one!

Congratulation Spangles

Non superfluous, contained, functional, highly technical English luxury. Wonderful watch. HNY

HNY! That's a perfect description, thanks!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-06:20

And the year starts on the right foot

 By: VinnieD : January 5th, 2021-06:04
That dial should keep you busy for hours! Truly superb - the best in the business afaik.

Beyond-impressive.

Congrats, and excellent choice. I hadn’t picked up on the novel shock absorption system, and will try to read about it.

What a watch!

That’s some heavy artillery!

 By: mrds : January 5th, 2021-06:30
Love the clean esthetics, the symmetric movement architecture, the finishing. Excuisite! Enjoy! Daniel

Many thanks!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-06:39

It's been my pleasure on every occasion I've had the opportunity to photograph the watches.

 By: gadalex : January 5th, 2021-07:01
I've no doubt you will have a fantastic visit when the time comes. Regards, Baruch

Congratulations on this special piece!

 By: xiu laba : January 5th, 2021-08:16
Impressive both at the front and the back! An owner's review further down the road maybe to reveal to us less fortunate souls who didn't get to own this piece?

Thanks, will do!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-08:52

One of the most exciting watches that money can buy

 By: mhz vph : January 5th, 2021-08:45
Congratulations and enjoy!

I agree! Many thanks!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-08:52

Same size wrist so good to know...

 By: mdg : January 5th, 2021-09:48
...I wish it was 39mm since it's such a pure 'dress watch,' but we all face hurdles in life : ) I love the engraving on the movement. I would be torn between the Arabic and Roman numerals...

Kinda!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-10:53
Well, 3/4. The case fits the ethos of the watch well. ...

Thanks...

 By: mdg : January 5th, 2021-12:30

Appreciate it, it's been a trip!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-10:51

Truly spectacular!

 By: destrodan : January 5th, 2021-10:38
I have very few grail watches on my list, but this one resides above them all. Wear it in good health! Kind regards, Dan

Huge congrats.

Thats one stunning and gorgeous watch . Love it

¡Gracias!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-13:23

I don't have to tell you what a special watch that is

 By: blau : January 5th, 2021-13:53
But I will anyway: that is one really special watch! Congratulations on acquiring it!

Ha ha! Thanks!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-13:56

Congratulations on this incredible acquisition!

 By: jleno : January 5th, 2021-15:15
Great choice with the 22k gold and Romans as well!

Thanks, I appreciate the vote of confidence!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-16:24
SS or wg with arabics is a popular choice as well.

OMG, huge congrats my friend. What a pick up. Those photos are unreal. Love that dial and and yes, the depth of the movement as well...

 By: holdemchamp1225 : January 5th, 2021-15:32
I'm sure you will wear the heck out of it and enjoy every second 😉🔥😜

Not that it’s about this, but I think you’ve won 2021 with this incoming. Winning ! (As the kids used to say)

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 5th, 2021-15:44
Seriously, many congrats and a lifetime of enjoyment on this one. I’m sorry that you didn’t get to pick it up in person but perhaps it will be even better to go at a later point having lived with the watch for some time. Now you just need to get outside a...

Merci, will do!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 5th, 2021-16:29

I appreciate it! I'll venture outside!

I hope other folks can document visiting the gold foundry (which you can do to see your case assayed and stamped) as well as the manufacture visit. Well, Richard also offered to go have "pie and a pint" with me, so in better days I hope to do at least tha...

Congratulations

This watch has been on my mind for some time, it’s very understated compared to Roger Smith’s masterpieces. Could imagine it fitting into my quiet life a lot easier. You must be thrilled to finally have it on your wrist. Lots to unpack and appreciate in t...

Hey thanks!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-05:24
For sure the WG or SS will go way under the radar. The movement is arguably more interesting than a RWS (which is a true masterpiece, as you say) and the escapement specifically is clearly horologically superior by a big step.

Congrats to this nice piece.

 By: brauner : January 6th, 2021-09:29
I like the purple color in your pics.

Thanks! Purple is my color!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-09:48

Superb. Not many of these in the wild.

 By: darmatgre-1 : January 6th, 2021-14:57
Beautiful on both sides. I hope to be able to see one in the metal one day. In the meantime, keep posting scans! Darren

Danke, Darren.

What a patient move Mr. Spangles and a wonderful watch reward!

 By: GreatPilot@me.com : January 6th, 2021-19:40
I am so happy for you, I just bought my first RW Smith Series 2 with the same George Daniels escarpment, I feel like I’m in a class of my own as you have every right to feel as well. Enjoy your watch and the experience only a few luck souls get to have......

That is an awesome and beautiful watch, thank you for sharing!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-21:18
I love the applied numerals! I am happy for you, too! Congratulations!

Great piece

 By: Cozmopak : January 6th, 2021-21:22
One that is tempting me as well. I suppose without the need for lubricant, the movement probably doesn’t need to be serviced very often

Thanks, yes, that's one benefit.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 6th, 2021-21:26
Although, the gear train still needs lubrication, the escapement is completely free of it. As for servicing, the first service is free as Richard wants to see how everything is holding up under real world conditions. I have a feeling it will be quite a wh...
